I’m sure by now most of you have seen the Twitter #girlgang.
#girlgang was founded by Jemma who blogs at Dorkface as a way to bring the blogging community together. The # is used for a Twitter chat, but more importantly, it is being used by a wide range of bloggers to spread a message of positivity and acceptance across the blogging community.
It is simple to sign up and doesn’t cost anything. Once you’ve signed up, start using the # to promote posts with a positive vibe, re-tweet other posts and chat to like minded bloggers – bloggers who believe in raising each other up rather than tearing each other down.
As with all good ideas, this one has brought about a few negative comments. The ones I’ve seen being:
- It’s cliquey – If this was the case, then it wouldn’t be open to anyone. Yes, the name is #girlgang, but the community is open to men too. I don’t think this # is anymore cliquey than any of the others. Like minded people retweeting posts/blogs they enjoy and chatting is hardly a clique.
- It’s one blogger’s way of exploiting others to make money – Well it’s free to sign up so I’m not sure how this is exploitation. Yes, there is a small range of products with the # on but no one forces anyone to buy them, it’s just a bit of fun.
- It’s one blogger using others to get more traffic – Yes, the badge links back to Jemma’s blog. She came up with the idea and made the badge, so to me this is no different to a linky badge. Also, I’m sure she hasn’t enlisted MI5 to track anyone down who doesn’t use it.
Carrying on slightly from the point above, Jemma hasn’t asked me (or anyone else to my knowledge) to write a post about this, I just think it’s a nice community and a good way of us all sharing our positive posts with each other so I thought I would share it with all of you.
What do you think? Why is there always negativity whenever someone has a nice idea to help others promote things? Jealousy maybe? Let me know your thoughts in the comments 🙂
