I am definitely back on track with my reading this month.
This first book review from January’s Reading List is Dying For Christmas by Tammy Cohen. This is the first of Tammy Cohen’s books I’ve tried and I will be sure to be looking up the rest at some point.
Dying for Christmas by Tammy Cohen: Book Review
Blurb from The Back Cover
Sometimes, evil comes gift-wrapped…
I am missing. Held captive by a blue eyed stranger. To mark the twelve days of Christmas, he gives me a gift every day, each more horrible than the last. The twelfth day is getting closer. After that, there’ll be no more Christmas cheer for me. No mince pies, no carols. No way out…
But I have a secret.
No one has guessed it.
Will you?
My Thoughts on The Book
Firstly, I’d like to explain why I’m reading a Christmas themed book in January as it does sound pretty weird. I didn’t spot it until after Christmas, but I liked the look of it and I wanted to read it anyway and I am way too impatient to wait a year.
Anyway, the only real Christmas part is that it is set within the twelve days of Christmas, and of course the captor gives her gifts each day. It’s not over-bearingly Christmassy and it’s still worth a read outside of the festive period.
Billed as “Misery meets Gone Girl” it was obvious straight away that Dying For Christmas isn’t going to be a Christmassy feel good thing which works for me.
As it states in the blurb, the main character, Jessica is being held captive by a charming, if very weird, man. His character in the book fascinates me – he switches between utterly charming and a total lunatic with very little provocation.
It is hard to say much about what happens without giving away the big secret or just repeating the blurb, but one thing I will say – when you get to the reveal, it will blow your mind.
Conclusion and Rating
This is one hell of a book.
I loved everything about it – the way it’s written, the twists and turns, the look inside the mind of someone who is truly disturbed and the general tone and feel of the writing. I read it in pretty much one go, I didn’t want to put it down. It stayed with me long after I finished reading it too, which is always a sign of a good book. I would highly recommend this one. 5/5

Sounds great. I love it when a book stays with me for a while afterwards.
