Time for my fourth and final book review from December’s reading list, The Descendants by Kaui Hart Hemmings.
Apologies for the lateness of this review. I didn’t get a lot of reading done in December, but I have caught up now and made a start on January’s list. Also, apologies for the stream of book reviews at once. Now I’m all caught up, normal service will resume.
The Descendants by Kaui Hart Hemmings: A Review
Blurb from The Back Cover
A descendant of one of Hawaii’s largest land owners, Matt King finds his luck changed when his fun-loving, flirty wife Joanie falls into a coma, victim of a boating accident.
Matt is left in sole charge of his two daughters, teenage ex-model and recovering drug addict Alex, and Scottie, a feisty ten-year-old.
And then Matt discovers Joanie has been having an affair. Deciding to seek out Joanie’s lover so that he too has a chance to say his goodbyes, Matt takes to the road with his daughters on a memorable journey of painful revelations and unexpected humour.
My Thoughts on The Book
This is one of those book where I don’t think the blurb does the story justice. This isn’t just the story of a trip to find someone before it’s too late.
It’s a story of love and how it doesn’t die, even when you find out something that makes you want it to.
It’s the story of self sacrifice so you can do something truly amazing for a loved one.
And mostly, it’s the story of a father who loves his daughter so much and but upon finding himself their primary carer, he realises how little about them he actually knows.
Matt is a character who wants so badly to do the right thing by everyone, even though what he is about to do is something that he would rather not face. He is a character you can and will root for.
For all the story covers a serious topic, it’s not too upsetting, and is very readable.
Conclusion and Rating
The journey in this book symbolises Matt’s journey with his daughters which I like. The relationships between each of the characters is told really well. Definitely worth a read. 4/5
