I hate winter. Well, hate’s a strong word, but I definitely strongly dislike it.
There’s just something about it that starts to get me down after so long. A month to six weeks would be fine, but this three to four month winter just isn’t working for me.
I hate the way it chaps my lips, dries my skin up and generally makes everyone miserable.
Here’s what I hate about winter:
How Winter Weather Causes Chaos
Through December, it’s not so bad.
There’s Christmas to look forward to, and if we get a bit of snow, then the world looks like a Christmas card. Who doesn’t love a white Christmas? But if we get snow in January or February, it bothers me and makes me want to reach for the snow blower shovel. I don’t want the world to look like a Christmas card – Christmas is done with for the year. After the first snowball fight, it gets old quickly.
Then there’s the way the whole country comes to a complete stop. I mean look at somewhere like Canada – they have snow drifts taller than the average house and they just get on with life. Here, we get one snowflake and all hell breaks loose.
And there is no chance of getting a gritter out early enough to actually do any good. At the risk of sounding ancient, at least when I was at school, snow or rain wasn’t an excuse to stay home. What’s with snow days? I’m so jealous of today’s kids for that one.
The Lack Of Sunlight (Or Any Light)
I know in the UK we don’t get a massive amount of sun at the best times, but I really miss the tiny bit we do get, and I miss thinking everyday “Tomorrow will be sunny”.
It’s just not the same in winter because I know there’s not even a tiny chance of it happening.Β Unless you count that pale, watery effort that does nothing but make you squint.
Something about opening your curtains on a morning and seeing a bit of sun sets you up for a happy day in a way torrential rain just doesn’t.
I swear I was born in the wrong country.
I miss having days that don’t end at 5pm, days where there is still light at 10pm. It makes everyday drag. It feels like it should be midnight and it’s 7.30.
Winter Nights Out Just Aren’t The Same
I still like a good night out, but it’s just different in winter. I like sitting outside, even it’s a little chilly, sipping fruity cocktails and watching the world go by. In winter, it’s just a mad dash to the next bar, hoping your not too blue and that your hair doesn’t go frizzy in the rain. It probably doesn’t help that I’m a true North Eastener and refuse to wear a coat of any form on a night out.
Come on winter, we’re over you. You’ve had your time, now move over and let summer get a bit closer.

I used to like the winter… Not love, that’s for sure, just like. Wrapping up warm and coming home to a hot house. The food is full of soups and casseroles, and it looks pretty.
Since having kids, I hate it. Everyone gets sick and you never know what to wear. It’s a pain.
I’m looking forward to my favourite season; Spring!

I do quite like the excuse to buy lots of pairs of new boots but that’s it lol π Spring I can cope with but I’m more for summer.

Oh yeah snow after Christmas is just depressing and annoying! We are completely useless with it in this country, we would just lay down and die in the snow in the UK lol! Everyone else just gets on with it. #effitfriday
Debbie, My Random Musings
Totally! I know when I see the news reports I sit screaming at the TV – it’s only a tiny bit, man up haha π

I’m not a Winter person either. This Winter has been fine because it hasn’t been too cold and we’ve hardly gotten any snow. At least, not in Massachusetts. The rest of New England, all the way down to Virginia got a lot of snow, more than they usually get, which is fine by me. Last Winter I had to try to drive in back to back snow storms for almost two months – part of January and all of February- and my car kept breaking down on me. After last Winter, I am over it too and so happy I have not seen too much snow this year. Let’s hope it stays that way until Spring. LOL! #effitfriday

Sounds like you’ve been lucky this year. Last year doesn’t sound fun at all! I hope it does stay that way for you π
Crummy Mummy
I’ve had enough of it all too now. Can’t WAIT for summer! #effitfriday

Me too, it seems to drag on forever!

I miss running between pubs on Linthorpe road with blue arms although I have turned into a Dutchie now and bring a coat along. I am definitely a summer girl, give me sunshine and light any day.
Debbie, My Random Musings
Haha, sounds familiar. And moaning you’re freezing but refusing to wear anything remotely warm! You’ll have to pop home for a visit and remind yourself we don’t need coats lol π Me too!
Jessica Powell (Babi a Fi)
It really is so miserable. And I’m fed up of being cold all the time. π #binkylinky

Me too, winter sucks! Roll on summer
DaisLikeThese
Totally agree. As soon as Christmas is over I long for Summer!

I’m glad I’m not the only one!

I live in Texas, where we barely have winter, and I have mixed feelings about it. I miss the snow! We haven’t had any this year. And while it’s warm enough to go outside much of the time, it still gets dark so early I feel tired all the time. I wish we had a true winter sometimes.
Debbie, My Random Musings
In one sense that sounds pretty good, but in another I think having a winter makes you appreciate the summer more. Right now I’d swap though lol π
Emma Jones
I strongly dislike winter too. I’m so over it. It’s nice to wrap up warm for awhile but I NEED sunshine, maxi dresses and bbq’s π #binkylinky lifeinthemumslane

Me too. You just described one of my favourite days π

The end of winter is like the end of summer for me…I’m sick of it and ready to move on to the next season. By the end of summer I’m sick of the heat, I’m sick of the kids complaining it’s too hot to play outside and wanting me to get out some kind of water play toy everyday which then I forget is on until it has flooded the entire lawn. In winter ….Jan and Feb are hard months for me…I get depressed of getting stuck in the house with the kids cause it’s too damn cold to go outside and they are always getting sick. I’m looking forward to Spring…I plan to grow a bigger variety of garden this year, teach my kids to ride bikes, and hopefully be down to my desired weight by then. Thanks for hostessing #effitfridays!πTrista

The summers here aren’t hot enough to feel that way about them. It sounds like you’ve got a lot to look forward to this spring π You’re welcome and thanks for linking up!

Haha, I live in Canada – I can attest to how high our snow drifts are. And it’s been mild this year. I don’t even mind the awful road conditions and the shovelling required… the worst thing about winter is, wait for it, GETTING KIDS IN SNOW SUITS!! Especially when you have more than one kid! The worst! Someone always ends up crying before we’re out the door (it’s usually me), and it takes longer to get dressed and undressed then the time we actually spend in the great outdoors. Rant over. Thanks for letting me express my rage! <3 #effitfridays

That does sound tricky! I think I would cry too lol π Feel free to express your rage, I like to know I’m not the only one who feels this way!

My boys are still small and get grumpy when out in the cold. So that makes us pretty much housebound. Roll on Spring π x
Debbie, My Random Musings
Oh no, it must be even worse being stuck indoors with little ones with nowhere to burn all their energy off! x
Emily
I couldn’t agree more. The dark mornings and evenings, the cold weather, it’s horrid. Thanks for linking up to the #BinkyLinky
Debbie, My Random Musings
It really is! I’m glad I’m not the only one who feel this way! Thanks for hosting π
Lizzie
I’m over the long dark nights and my cracked, dry hands. But, I do love winter, I’m still praying for snow!! I feel you though, spring is looming!
Debbie, My Random Musings
Oh wow really? I guess I could go for one big snowball fight as long as it’s all gone the next day lol π
