Is there something you have always wanted to do but never gotten around to doing? It could be anything – calligraphy, photography, knitting, flower arranging, computer programing, learning a new language – literally anything.
Are you like me and want to learn something new but never have the time? Or do you put it off because you don’t prioritise yourself? Or are you scared you won’t be able to do it?
Whatever the reason you haven’t gotten around to it yet, here are three reasons to make the time to learn a new skill today:
It Will Make You Feel Good
Accomplishing something always makes you feel good. Leaning that new skill can be a real confidence boost. Knowing that you invested some time in yourself and proved that you can do it will do wonders for your self esteem. Whether it’s a framed certificate on your wall, a piece of art you created or holding a conversation with a local in a foreign country, you should feel proud of yourself for taking the time to learn something new.
Use It Or Lose It
You’ve probably heard this expression with regards to muscles and fitness – the same is true for your brain. Ok, technically, you won’t lose it, but unless you keep your brain active, learning new skills becomes harder and harder. And you never know when the skill you learn might come in useful. Either directly (could you sell the things you make etc) or indirectly, in that, it keeps your mind active.
A Chance To Meet New People
Learning a new skill is a good way to meet like minded people. Either by doing a course at a local college or business centre and meeting people in real life, or just by talking about your new found skill on online forums and social media. You can never have too many friends, and even the shyest person has a perfect ice breaker when you know you have at least one thing in common with everyone in the room.
Which new skill would you like to learn? Let me know in the comments 🙂

That is true! Sometimes it is easy to say oh, I’m too old or too busy or too tired but I am a firm believer that learning is a life long journey! And being able to master a skill is definitely a ego booster! #KCACOLS… I am trying to learn the IT side of blogging…AH!

It’s a great feeling when everything comes together and you “get” it! The IT blogging thing is hard but so worth it 🙂

Learning new skills helps us to be more current and for life to be more interesting. I personally love learning and I’m trying to teach my kids to live the process as well: as always a great linky #KCACOLS

I love learning too, you can never have too many skills! It’s a great thing to instil in your kids 🙂

This is all very true. I love learning a new skill as it is fun and like you say a great way of meeting new people #kcacols

Thank you 🙂 It is fun if it’s something you enjoy doing!

When I had my first child, it was such a hard transition for me because work was my life and I was used to being busy. Now after my second, I have learned to appreciate home time more and to make time for myself to learn new skills. This past year I started kickboxing (so much fun!) and blogging, both of which I love. I completely recommend trying something new to everyone!

Wow, those are two opposite ends of the spectrum to start! Obviously I love blogging and kick boxing sounds like a really good way to keep fit too. Thank you 🙂

Very encouraging Debbie! I’ve lately realised I’ve stopped thinking big, and have just been surviving, but I want to change that. I think learning a new skill would be a good place to start 🙂

I think it would be, getting that sense of accomplishment is a great motivator!

I would love to learn photography but just never get round to it. This has inspired me to look into it further! Thank you! #manicmonday

Good luck if you decide to pursue it, it’s a great skill for a blogger 🙂

I’m going to sound like a total blogger geek here but I’d like to learn some coding. Right now I’m at the totally clueless stage. I have added code to my blog but haven’t created any myself. It’d be nice to understand the inner workings of the blog better! #ManicMonday
Debbie, My Random Musings
That doesn’t sound geeky at all, it’s good to understand how your site works 🙂 I’d love to be able to take an empty page and code it up to look really good!

There are definitely some things I want to learn or get better at but haven’t had the time. I haven’t played the guitar or the piano since high school and I always keep meaning to get back into it but never do. I’ve also always wanted to learn photography and learn several other languages:) Thanks so much for linking up with #manicmonday

It’s hard to fit everything in! I always wanted to learn Spanish 🙂 And photography would be great for a blogger

I agree with you. There is always something new that we would like to learn and you never know when that can be useful for you. I would love to learn how to edit videos. I know the basic but I would like to know all about it! At the moment my hubby is editing my videos but I would love to get more involved in that process too. Thanks so much for sharing this at #KCACOLS. I would love to see you again on Sunday! 🙂 x

Thank you 🙂 It’s good that your hubby is able to edit them for you, but it would be great if you were able to learn from him as I think video editing would be not only useful, but such a fun thing to do as you watch your creation come to life. Thanks for hosting, see you Sunday x
