Today is the (slightly late as usual) review for Ever After by Kim Harrison, the last book from January’s reading list. I’ve done a little extra reading this week so I have managed to get back on track with it.
Ever After by Kim Harrison
Blurb from The Back Cover
Welcome to the Hollows…
The ever-after, the demonic realm that parallels our own, is shrinking and it’s up to witch-turned-daywalking-demon Rachel Morgan to stop it before the fragile balance between Inderlanders and humans falls apart.
Of course, there’s also the small fact that Rachel caused the ley line to rip in the first place. And the most powerful demon in the ever-after, the soul eater Ku’Sox Sha-Ku’Ru, had kidnapped her friend and her goddaughter as leverage in his quest for vengeance. If Rachel doesn’t give herself up for execution, they will die.
Rachel must team up with elven tycoon Trent Kalamack – a partnership fraught with perils of the heart and soul – to rescue those she loves.
My Thoughts on The Book
Ever After is a book that is so much more than the blurb gives it credit for. It’s a book about bravery, love, sacrifice, honour and more.
Rachel makes an excellent lead character. I wouldn’t say she is fearless, sometimes she is terrified, but she doesn’t let fear stand in her way. She is determined to put the ley lines right after she is blamed for them being faulty, in an attempt to rescue her friends.
The book takes you to another world. I never would have believed I could come to care about characters that are elves, pixies, gargoyles and fairies, not to mention demons and vampires, but it is so well written that you do come to care.
Conclusion and Rating
When I first started reading Ever After, I was a bit dubious once I discovered it was more fantasy than horror. I needn’t have worried, I was hooked by the end of the first page. I will be looking out for Kim Harrison books, that’s for sure. 4/5
