I don’t normally read much non-fiction, but when I was approached to review this Clinical Hypnosis Textbook by Professor Ursula James, I jumped at the chance.
As someone who has studied psychology, the human mind fascinates me, and hypnosis has always captured my attention. It intrigues me how, when someone is in such a relaxed state, often the bigger truths come out.
The book’s full title is actually Clinical Hypnosis Textbook. A Guide For Practical Intervention – Third Edition if you are looking it up.
My Review of Clinical Hypnosis Textbook by Professor Ursula James
Blurb from The Back Cover
This comprehensive volume demystifies the process of clinical hypnosis and it takes the reader through the process of hypnotherapy sessions in a simple and easy to understand manner. It offers practical suggestions on identifying the best approach to take: setting objectives for therapy, constructing a session and finally evaluating the outcomes.
This edition also includes chapters from specialists and encourages the reader to recognise the significance of the individual in the therapeutic process.
Used as a textbook in 10 UK medical schools, it is now required reading for the MSc in clinical hypnosis at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.
An excellent introduction for all health professionals, or to enhance session construction for experienced medical hypnosis practitioners.
My Thoughts on The Book
The Clinical Hypnosis Textbook goes a long way to making hypnosis understandable. Written in language that is easy to understand, and not full of jargon, it is a very interesting read.
It covers a range of topics from basic definitions, building a session and using CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy).
It very much promotes client-centred therapy and makes it clear that each person is different, therefore their therapy needs to be centred around them.
It states a lot of different scenarios where hypnosis would be useful and explores them in detail. This professor knows her stuff.
Conclusion and Rating
If you have an interest in hypnosis as therapy, I think you would enjoy Clinical Hypnosis Textbook. It doesn’t read like a textbook, so much as a journey of discovery. I don’t think you would have to have a whole lot of knowledge about hypnosis or therapy in general to understand this book.
I think it is best read in small sections to allow each part to sink in. I read the book over a couple of days and I felt I missed some parts, so I will be re-reading this in more manageable pieces.
Very interesting and very informative. 5/5

I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review. I would never recommend a book I didn’t genuinely enjoy. As an avid reader, it would just feel wrong.

Hypnosis is interesting. I don’t read too many non fiction books either.

Thank you 🙂 I’m more into fiction unless the topic really appeals to me.

Interesting. Hypnosis is a fascinating subject. Since my undergraduate degree is in psychology, I am especially interested in the subject. Thank you for the review.
