Firstly let me just point out that this will in no way be Harry Potter fan fiction. I don’t really “get” fan fiction, why not just write your own story? Anyway, I’ve digressed already and I haven’t even wrote a paragraph yet.
I recently re-read all the Harry Potter books.
I thought of doing a book review, but I think everyone on the planet has read the books and/or seen the movies so it’s a bit pointless really.
Instead, I thought I would share my thoughts on how I think the ending would actually go.
Note: if you like happy endings, look away now, this may scar you for life:
So remember at the very end of Deathly Hallows where we get the flash forward and they all live happily ever after?
I have a feeling that will be about to change as there’s a new book due out. I have no idea what it’s about, but I’d take a guess at some of the surviving death eaters (or their children) will re-band and try to get some sort of revenge on Harry’s children before another happy ending.
Here’s how I think that flash forward would really look:
- Harry would have finished his teenage years with a major case of depression. Everyone he has ever loved has died horribly, how could he not have some issues?
- Ginny, a teenager herself, and quite a naïve one at that, would have no idea how to deal with this. She would have left him, probably for Neville.
- So by the flash forward, Harry will be alone, never daring to love again because of the fear of anyone else dying. He would have turned to alcohol to numb the pain, and would be a raging alcoholic.
- Hermoine would have realised by now she made the wrong choice all those years ago. She should have been with Harry. Lumped with Ron, she would become bitter and twisted, resenting Ron for ruining her life.
- Ron, aware of how Hermoine feels and knowing he could never live up to the fantasy of the life with Harry Hermoine has built up in her head, would sink deeper into self pity. Ultimately, he would kill himself.
- Hermoine would go to Harry and tell him how she feels. He would learn about Ron’s suicide and realise someone else he cared about has ended up dead because of him.
- Sinking further into isolation, he would reject Hermoine, afraid of what might happen if allows himself to admit to loving her.
- Rejected by her one true love, and feeling guilty about Ron, Hermoine would commit suicide too.
- Harry would continue to drink heavily in an attempt to forget the past. Failing miserably, he would be haunted by the ghosts of his past, eventually dying old and alone, clutching a whiskey bottle.
For the record, I loved Harry Potter and I’m glad all the main characters got their happy ending. This is just a bit of fun, but if the books had really ended this way, I would have been mortified. I hope I haven’t broken anyone’s heart too much.
Disclaimer: I am in no way suggesting depression, alcoholism or suicide aren’t serious, and should be made light of. What I am trying to do is put a realistic spin on Harry’s situation (granted with a little dark humour). I think mental health issues are still quite a taboo subject, but we shouldn’t be afraid to talk about them. I hope everyone takes this in the spirit it is intended.
Do you like Harry Potter? Do you think the gruesome ending I envisage is a little more realistic or just cruel? How would you have ended it? I’d love to know what you think. Let me know in the comments 🙂

Believe it or not, I have not read any of the Harry Potter books, nor any of the Twilight books. However, I have recently found myself reading more books, and have secretly thought about actually reading these series. One day, I just might.
Debbie, My Random Musings
I haven’t read Twilight either, I watched the movies and that kind of put me off, but the books are probably better! I would definitely recommend Harry Potter though 🙂

I haven’t read the books, but have watched the films… I have to admit that I love them. Didn’t realise there was another book (theatre script) coming out! Sounds interesting!
I think that your alternative ending ideas are an interesting spin. An amusing ‘but what if….’ read. X
Debbie, My Random Musings
I shouldn’t admit this publicly but I must say this is one of the tiny few instances where I actually prefer the movies to the books! Thank you, glad you liked it 🙂 x

Oh NO Debbie!!! The books are so much better!
Debbie, My Random Musings
Sorry lol! As a reader it pains me to like the movies better! I think it’s because I saw them before reading the books.

A dark ending indeed! But perhaps after everything Harry went through, it was perhaps a little unbelievable that he escaped without any ‘issues’! I’m looking forward to the new book quite a lot!
Debbie, My Random Musings
Yes, it was nice that he got a happy ending, but I think a lot of what he dealt with would come back to haunt him later in life! Me too 🙂
Patricia Lynne
You have a dark and twisted mind. I love it.
Debbie, My Random Musings
I do lol! Thank you 🙂

[…] Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J K Rowling (Instead of reviewing the series, I did an alternate ending!) […]

It is a much darker ending for sure but a fairly believable one; I don’t know how Harry wouldn’t be scarred for life after everything he went through.
