Welcome to day four of the A to Z Challenge! My theme is 100 word (give or take a word or two) flash fiction on the darker side of human nature. I hope you enjoy.
Darkness
The darkness envelopes me like a reassuring embrace. I cannot understand why people fear the dark. We are one. My soul is dark, made that way by the cruel world I live in. In darkness I feel safe, hidden, accepted. The light shows the scars inside of me, it shows how I am twisted, broken. In the darkness I can creep from place to place. Unseen, unnoticed. Whereas the light highlights my imperfections, the darkness covers them, makes me seem whole. Equal, accepted, one with the unbroken people around me. Darkness is my friend, my armour, my life.

Your flash pieces are wonderful!
Thank you so much 🙂
Brilliant! I checked your blog first thing to read your next instalment. Really enjoying reading it. If you haven’t already, you should write a book! X #atozchallenge.
Thank you, I’m glad you’re enjoying it 🙂 I’m actually part way through editing my first book! x
I loved it, I adore the darkness theme you have going on. //fellow challenger
Thank you, it’s a really fun theme to work with strange as that sounds!
There’s a lot of darkness in that little piece!
Thank you 🙂
Very nice! I like how you turn darkness into something to be embraces, something that provides protection.
Cheers – Ellen
Thank you 🙂 I think the dark gets a bad name and it can be a welcome relief for some people
Interesting piece. As someone who has been accused of ‘living in a cave’ because I rarely have the lights on… it makes me wonder if there is a deeper correlation to my inner thoughts.
Thank you 🙂 Maybe you’re right. If you’re a naturally shy person, being in darkness can feel like a relief!
Nice. You were ambiguous enough to leave who was speaking open to the imagination.

Thank you 🙂
A great piece of flash fiction. Always admire writers who can do it well. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much 🙂
This is a really interesting piece. Great job.
Thank you, I’m glad you liked it 🙂
Powerful stuff.
Thank you 🙂
Nice work once again. This could be used by so many characters in a horror genre tale.
So few words needed to create such depth. 🙂
Thank you 🙂 I would really like to work this into something a bit longer, maybe I will do so in the future
Maybe this is why some like to frequent bars and nightclubs to meet people.
Yes, a night club is the perfect place to hide in plain view!
There can be light in darkness, if one looks hard enough…
Flash fiction is hard to write and you do it well. Packed a lot in those few words.
Thank you very much 🙂
Mysterious and creepy. Darkness hides the flaws and imperfections. Will you be turning this into something longer when the challenge is over?
There’s quite a few of them that I’m tempted to re-work into longer stories and I think this would be a good one to explore.
When I was a teenager, I used to get ready in the dark for just those reasons.
So I can really relate to this piece.
I think the darkness is always portrayed as something bad, but sometimes, it can be a form of protection
Sometimes its the darkness that forms a cloak of invisibility around us. There is no shame in loving the darkness. It’s all accepting. Good luck with the rest of the challenge!
Cheers,
Deepa
I totally agree, the dark always gets a bad name, but it can be a good thing. Thank you, good luck to you too 🙂
