Welcome to day eight of the A to Z Challenge! My theme is 100 word (give or take a word or two) flash fiction on the darker side of human nature. I hope you enjoy.
Haunted
I am haunted. Not by the ghosts of those departed. By something much worse. Something that can’t be exorcised or banished, something I can’t ignore. I am haunted by myself, my past. The bad decisions that led me to this moment, the wrong turns, the naivety. Death is the only way out and I wait for it, invite it, but it doesn’t come. Death sees a kindred spirit when he looks at me, someone haunted in life, someone dark and twisted, much like himself. He will not take me, he will merely taunt me with his presence, haunting me further.

This is a little disconcerting, but very to-the-point. Nice.

Thank you 🙂

Sad. I guess all of us are haunted, to a certain extent, by regret, missed opportunities, and fear. I know my tend to pop up when I awake in the middle of the night – and then lie there, churning things over. Fortunately there’s nothing quite terrible enough to beckon death closer. I wonder what secrets your narrator harbors?
Debbie, My Random Musings
Yes, all those little niggles that can be ignored through the day time seem to creep up at night.

Uh oh. Although, death gets us all eventually.
Debbie, My Random Musings
That’s true
Yvonne
Death will catch up eventually. Another great post. X

Thank you 🙂 x

Disturbing, but I can relate. While not waiting for death, I’ve definitely been haunted by past mistakes.
Debbie, My Random Musings
Yes, me too. Not quite to the extent in the piece, but there’s some things I would not do given the chance to start over

We all have regrets, but most of us can live with them and move forward. Sadly, some of these tortured souls cannot. This was both moving and disturbing. Nicely done! 🙂
Debbie, My Random Musings
Yes, we all do, it’s how we process them that is different for each person. Thank you 🙂
The Silver Fox
I think a lot of us are haunted by the past.
Debbie, My Random Musings
Yes, I agree
Susan A Eames
That’s a powerful piece of flash, Debbie!

Definitely dark. Well-done on keeping to your theme! Regret can be corrosive. Here from the A-Z and thanks for the read.

Been there, done that. I think everyone does to some extent, but there are those of us who let it keep bothering them…
Debbie, My Random Musings
Yeah I think we all would change something given the chance, it’s how you let it affect you going forward!
Patricia Lynne
That was is eerie. A bit haunting even, if I might say. 😉

At the age of 75, each day is special to me. I have been haunted by guilt since my husband died, mainly not knowing if I made the right decision re. his care or helped him enough. But I have never been haunted by death.
If you post is a short story only, it’s well done, and well, haunting.
Debbie, My Random Musings
I’m sorry about your husband, I’m sure you did everything you could. This post is only fiction, thank you 🙂
Natalia Pessoa
Oh my, this one was creepy and very real to everyone currently living. /fellow challenger

I hope this person will learn to move on and exorcise that demon from their thoughts.
Debbie, My Random Musings
I hope so too!

What a good theme for A to Z! This definitely captured both the theme and ‘haunted’ well!
Debbie, My Random Musings
Thank you, I’m glad you like it 🙂

Rugged. Death is neither friend nor enemy. Remember, how you think gets you where you are. It can be hard, hard work to change your mind, but it can be done. Good luck!
Debbie, My Random Musings
I totally agree! I think the character in this story could benefit from such wisdom. Thank you 🙂
Kat Morrisey
The narrator is has a tortured soul, it seems. My kind of character. 🙂 Great job and looking forward to more of your writings throughout the challenge! Have a great week!

It all starts off so innocently and relatable. We all have those feelings from time to time of being haunted by our mistakes – both real and imagined.
… and then the *darkness* creeps in and I’m left wondering what exactly did the narrator do? … and do I REALLY want to know?
Debbie, My Random Musings
I think most people can relate to this to an extent – we all have regrets, but yes, the narrator in this piece is definitely holding onto something big!
Dan Miller
A startling piece of writing but I like it very much. I wish I could write like that. The whole series here is fascinating to read. Thanks!
