Time for the review of The Shepherd by Ethan Cross, the second book from April’s reading list.
The Shepherd by Ethan Cross: My Review
Blurb from The Back Cover
Meet Francis Ackerman, America’s most terrifying serial killer.
What excites him most is the game of chance.
He likes to play with ordinary people. Innocent people.
Someone just like you.
If you take part in Ackerman’s game, he’ll stalk you, then take you prisoner.
Will he let you live? Or will you die?
There are so many different ways to dies, and Ackerman knows them all. It’s part of his game.
Do you wanna play?
Francis Ackerman does. And he’s found you…
My Thoughts on The Book
The Shepherd is the first novel from Ethan Cross. The book focuses on serial killer Francis Ackerman and his games. There is also a sub-plot that I won’t spoil by going into here, but it makes for a really interesting read. The plot twists and turns at a serious pace, and there were parts that left me open mouthed.
It brought to mind what you would get if you mixed the movies Saw and Exam – the torturous games with twisted, cold logic and the twists where nothing is as it seems.
There are also two more books available in The Shepherd series now, but I haven’t read them yet, they are on my tbr list.
Conclusion and Rating
It is hard to believe that The Shepherd is a debut novel – Cross writes like he’s been doing it for years. It grabbed me from page one and never let go. Definitely one for all horror/crime fans. 5/5

Ooh! That sounds delightfully dark and twisty.
Anne
That sounds very dark to me. I really didn’t like the Saw film so maybe this book will be a bit too much, even though I like crime and horror (but more ghostly horror than gruesome.)
Debbie, My Random Musings
It’s definitely gory/gruesome. Probably not one i would recommend to you based on your comment
