Welcome to day twenty-two of the A to Z Challenge! My theme is 100 word (give or take a word or two) flash fiction on the darker side of human nature. I hope you enjoy.
Vanity
It is vanity that lets people think I am ok, happy even. The vanity that makes me paint on a smile and pretend I am like everyone else, happy, normal. They have no idea, those people around me – friends, neighbours even family don’t see the real me. They see the picture pride paints, the picture of someone strong, unbreakable. They don’t see the truth inside. The weak, broken child who sits crying, sucking her thumb. I wish I could let them see her, let sunlight grace her sad face, but vanity wins out and the world sees only the veneer beneath which she hides.
For extended versions of the A-Z flash fiction pieces and some whole new stories too, download my book, Twisted Tales.

People are more sympathetic than you’d think. Well, most of the time.

I agree, I think friends want to be let in and be able to be there for their friends, but it’s not always easy letting go of the brave face

From personal experience it is really hard letting others know you have weaknesses. It took me years of friendship to let people know of the ailments inside me and even still…

Yes, it seems these days we have to be strong all the time, regardless of what’s going on in our lives.

I can relate to this a lot. I am very good at putting a face on, the only two people that can see through it is my hubby and my mum! Great post 🙂 x

It’s so much harder to hide your true feelings from those closest to you. Thank you 🙂 x

That is a sad one and I think a lot of people can relate to that.

Yes, I think most of us experience this to one extent or another through out our lives.

Ah, Vanity. I think it’s probably most people’s problem. We’re so (now more than ever) caught up in what everyone thinks about our outward appearance that we dare never show what’s on the inside. Great writing.

Yes, I think we are so busy trying to appear strong and like we know what’s going on at every moment that we never really let the wall down. Thank you 🙂
