As promised in May’s reading list today’s post is my review of Geek Girl 5: Head Over Heels by Holly Smale. If you haven’t read any Holly Smale books, give them a go, she’s fab.
Geek Girl 5: Head Over Heels by Holly Smale
Blurb from The Back Cover
Harriet Manners knows many facts:
- Fourteen squirrels were once detained as spies
- Snakes and Ladders and Chess were both invented in the same country
- Astronauts’ hearts become rounder in space
And for once, Harriet knows exactly how her life should go. She’s got it all mapped out. So when her friends seem less than happy, Harriet is determined to make things happen. If only everyone else would stick to the script…
But is following the plan going to break hearts all over again for Geek Girl?
My Thoughts on The Book
I’m a big fan of the Geek Girl series. Harriet is one of those characters you just feel for – you want her to get her happily ever after. She is relatable.
Ok, she’s a teenage model, but she’s also a geek, has trouble making and keeping friends, is clumsy, awkward and has very few social skills. In short, she’s the average teenage girl just trying to make her way in the world. You just want to reach into the pages and tell her it gets better.
In Geek Girl 5: Head Over Heels, Harriet goes on a mission to be the best model she can be in order to save her agent (and long time supporter) Wilbur. The mess she manages to get herself into is pretty funny, and of course one little white lie escalates to the point where you’re cringing for her.
She is also trying to navigate her new found social life, which also has some crazy consequences as she goes into typical Harriet uber organising mode.
Conclusion and Rating
Geek Girl 5: Head Over Heels is a fantastic addition to the series. We see a new, more focused side to Harriet. This is a light hearted, feel good read, perfect for getting lost in for a couple of hours.
I really admire Holly Smale as a writer – she manages to blend the worlds of high fashion with the realities of teenage life exceptionally well.
And she throws out trivia like nobodies business – I don’t know where she gets all these facts, but they add an interesting quirk to Harriet’s character and some of them might just score you some points in an obscure pub quiz question at some point. 5/5
