Finally, it’s time to share a review of Gone By Michael Grant, one of the books from May’s reading list.
Gone is actually book one in a series of six books but I am going to do the review in one post. It’s hard reviewing books that are later in the series without giving away spoilers from the first ones. For that reason, I will only be including the blurb from book one, and I won’t be giving any spoilers so don’t worry about that.
Gone by Michael Grant
Blurb from The Back Cover
Suddenly it’s a world without adults and normal has crashed and burned. When life as you know it ends at 15, everything changes.
A small town in Southern California: In the blink of an eye, everyone over the age of 15 disappears. Cut off from the outside world, those that are left are trapped, and there’s no help on the way. Chaos rules the streets.
Now a new world order is rising and, even scarier, some survivors have power – mutant power that no one has ever seen before…
My Thoughts on The Book
This is the best YA series I have read in a long time. Gone is the perfect introduction to the characters and their situation.
The series as a whole has a kind of Lord of the Flies feel to it, but more realistic, and the characters really come to life. There are no two characters alike, and the continuity across the books is spot on.
You know when you read a series, and there’s always that one book that’s just filler, and you really don’t need to even read it? This series doesn’t have one of them.
Each book is action packed, and each one leaves you hungry for the rest.
I love that the book is realistic. Everything isn’t all hearts and rainbows. People get hurt, people die and people crack up – that’s life, and it’s shown very well here.
Conclusion and Rating
I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the next books by Michael Grant. If you only read one YA series this year (or ever) make it this one 5/5

Do they ever explain what happened to those over the age of 15? I don’t think this series is for me, but my soon to turn 15-year-old niece might enjoy it.

Yes, I won’t spoil it by saying here, but it is all explained as the books progress. I really think she would, it’s really well written and the language etc isn’t dumbed down like some YA books
