Anyone who reads this blog regularly will know I’m about as crafty as an amoeba, seriously, I make the Pinterest fails look like masterpieces.
And yet here I am, doing something I never thought I would do – sharing a crafts post. It helps that pressed flowers require no sticky back plastic, cut off washing up liquid bottles or egg boxes.
Seriously though, pressed flowers are really easy to do and they make an nice decorative piece and they would make a lovely, personalized gift for someone.
You could do one from a flower from your wedding bouquet – it’s a lovely memory. This is the second time I’ve pressed flowers. The first time was about 12 years ago and that one is still going strong so they really do last.
For Each Of Your Pressed Flowers, You Will Need:
1 flower, ideally you want a partially opened one, if they are too open, the petals will look crushed rather than pressed. I like to have a leaf too but that’s optional.
1 brown envelope, large enough to fit the flower inside it.
A piece of sturdy cardboard, a bit bigger than your envelope.
Something heavy enough to press down on the flower – I used decorative rocks from an aquarium, but a stack of hard backed books would work just as well.
A sheet of black A4 cardboard – or whichever colour background you would like to have.
A photo frame of your choice – I like them portrait style, but really it’s up to you how you want it displaying.
A Step-By-Step Guide To Making Pressed Flowers
Step 1: Choose your flower.
Step 2: Cut the envelope into two equal sized pieces, each big enough to fully cover the flower and any accompanying leaves. Place the flower in the centre of one of the pieces.
Step 3: Cover your flower with the second piece of envelope.
Step 4: Place the sturdy cardboard on the floor, or on a hard surface. It needs to be somewhere room temperature and not in direct sunlight. Place the flower, still between it’s two envelope pieces on top of the cardboard, and finally, place the heavy items on top. Be careful to lower the weight down evenly and in one movement. Don’t attempt to drag it into place once it’s down or you’ll ruin the flower.
Step 5: Leave the flower with the weight on top for at least three weeks. After that, you can start checking it – it shouldn’t take much longer than three weeks. Make sure it is pressed flat and all the sap that is squeezed out is dried up. Once it’s ready, cut a piece of the black (or whatever colour you chose) cardboard to fit inside your photo frame.
Step 6: Pop the flower in the frame and close as normal.

I used to love pressing flowers as a child. My dad made me and my sister a press. The other day I saw one just like it and bought it for my niece.

Gosh, I haven’t pressed a flower since school lol – I’d forgotten how easy it is! I might see if I get the teen to join the pre-teen and I for a little flower pressing session π #bloggerclubuk
Debbie, My Random Musings
I was shocked how easy it was! Good luck getting the teen to join you lol π
Louise (Little Hearts, Big Love)
That looks beautiful. I’ve never tried to press flowers before and didn’t realise it was so simple. I ended up throwing my wedding bouquet but one of my bridesmaids had her bouquet dried and then gave it to me for an anniversary present which was lovely of her. Will have to try this with some other flowers though. #BloggerClubUK
Debbie, My Random Musings
Thank you π I was surprised it was so simple too. What a lovely gift for you anniversary

My daughter got a flower press at Christmas and we’ve been taking great delight in pressing all kinds of things and then sticking them in her nature journal with some Modge Podge… #BloggerClubUK

This looks great, so funny we were pressing flowers a few days ago! Some children really love it! It’s amazing how carefully they lay out the flowers and how serious they take it (: #BloggersClubUK
Debbie, My Random Musings
Thank you π I can imagine it being fun for the kids, great that take is seriously π
Sonia
I used to do it a lot as a teenager and used the ‘yellow pages’ though that isn’t big and heavy enough anymore!! I loved making cards for friends with them. I have bought a flower press for my girls which is great fun preparing but often gets forgotten during the 3 week wait! Nice crafty idea xx #BloggerClubUK
Debbie, My Random Musings
Cards would be a great idea to use them. Yeah 3 weeks is a long time for kids to wait! Thank you π x
Let kids be kids

Katy - Hot Pink Wellingtons
Lovely! I used to do this as a child with a proper flower press. I did press a few from my wedding bouquet, just in a heavy book, but unfortunately we completely forgot which book! No doubt they’ll turn up one day when we’re least expecting it! #bloggerclubuk
Debbie, My Random Musings
What a lovely surprise you’ll get when you find that book!
Jessica Powell (Babi a Fi)
I’ve been thinking of giving this a go lately – my last attempt was when I was about eight and was a bit of a disaster. I stuck it in the middle of an encyclopedia and the flower stained through lots of pages… as my parents discovered when they went to look something up! x #bloggerclubuk
Debbie, My Random Musings
Ooops! I hope you didn’t get into too much trouble π x
Briony
Oooo I love a pressed flower, I always some on the go to add to craft projects I’m doing. They are great on cards and can be popped inside those little keyring blanks and all sorts. I do pop mine in the airing cupboard to speed things up a bit though. #BloggerClubUK
Cheryl @ ReimerandRuby
Beautiful! Have tried this when I was still in secondary years, need to give this a go again. #BloggerClubUK
Debbie, My Random Musings
Go for it!

I really really wish I had pressed my wedding flowers. I don’t even know where they went at the end of the night. π
Debbie, My Random Musings
That’s a shame, but it’s easy to get caught up in the moment and not realise until it’s too late

A very pretty decorative idea. I have pressed a flower since I was in school. I might just give it a go X #bloggerclubuk

This is such a simple thing to do, we all should do it more often. I think I might get the kids to make some teacher ‘thank you’ cards this way. Wow, see that flash of inspiration!! #BloggerClubUK

Hi this is great because my daughter had a flower press given to her as a birthday present in March and I’d no idea how long to leave the flowers in it for, now I do-thanks!

This brings back memories for me, my Grandfather gave me a set to press flowers when I was a little girl and I loved it! #bloggerclubUK
Debbie, My Random Musings
It seems a lot of people did it when they were kids, I never did but I think I would have love it too π
Lisa (mummascribbles)
I think I did this once as a young girl but never since. It’s such a lovely idea to capture and important moment. I’d like to do this with wedding flowers (if we ever get married!) and I almost wish I’d have done it with just one of dad’s funeral flowers. It would be a lovely thing to have kept. Well done and thanks for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday
Debbie, My Random Musings
It would be lovely to keep one from your wedding flowers π This one is actually from my Grandmother’s funeral flowers, some people say it’s morbid but I think it’s a nice keepsake! Thank you and thanks for hosting x
Desanka @MommyBabyTime
This is so great! I have done pressed flowers and leaves but instead putting it in an envelope I used larger book to put the flower in.After you put some other heavy books on it and after a while your pressed flower is done! #BloggerClubUK
Debbie, My Random Musings
Great suggestion, that would be even simpler!
Sarah James @ Tales From The Kitchen Shed
It’s years since I’ve pressed any flowers, you’ve made me want to start pressing some again. Thanks for a lovely tutorial x
Debbie, My Random Musings
Go for it! Thank you π x
Unhinged Mummy (aka Janine Woods)
I wish I’d had thought of this about seven years ago after I got married. I had the most beautiful tear drop bouquet of fresh flowers made for me by my husbands Aunt and I loved my bouquet so much that after the wedding I took it into a flower shop and asked for them to be dried out but it would have cost me Β£300 (money that I just didn’t have). In the end I sadly binned them after they died. I didn’t even think about just keeping one and framing it. At least I got lots of photos but it’s just not the same.
#bloggerclubuk
Debbie, My Random Musings
What a shame that you had to throw them away. Β£300 is ridiculous for drying a bouquet!
Yvonne
This is not something I have ever tried. You have inspired me now π xxx #BloggerClubUK
Debbie, My Random Musings
That’s great, I hope you enjoy it π x
Debbie
Hi Debbie, I haven’t pressed flowers since the children were little. We used to place them between kitchen roll and newspaper and pop into a heavy book.
I like the idea of using a brown envelope, tidier than layers of kitchen roll!
xx
Debbie, My Random Musings
Thank you π Your idea works just as well though, I guess it depends on what you have to hand! x
scamperandtwirl
Simple and beautiful. I’ll do these with my kids π Thank you!
Debbie, My Random Musings
Thank you π I hope you all have fun with them!

I used to love pressing flowers when I was little! This reminds me I have yet to do it with BB… #twinklytuesday

That is so lovely! I am definitely going to have to try this! I am obsessed with flowers at the moment, and some of these would compliment my new office area so well! Totally bookmarking this page! #bloggerclubuk xx
Debbie, My Random Musings
Thank you π These would look great in an office! x
Becky, Cuddle Fairy
I’ve never pressed a flower before believe it or not! We have pressed leaves before – the boys like to collect them. I like how you put the rose in a frame when it was dried, good work Debbie! #BloggerClubUK
Debbie, My Random Musings
Something new to try with the kids then π Thank you!
Baby Isabella
What a lovely idea! We’re so trying this! We’ve dried flowers before but never pressed them successfully. Going to try this technique! Great step by step guide X #TwinklyTuesday #BloggerClubUK
Debbie, My Random Musings
Thank you π Good luck with yours! x
Silly Mummy
Great guide & it looks lovely. I loved pressing flowers as a child and, funnily enough, I have literally just started doing it with my eldest toddler the other week – she loved it! #BloggerClubUK
