Time for the review of The Bad Place by Dean Koontz, the final book from April’s reading list. It feels strange posting this so late when I am well into the books from May’s reading list, but due to the A-Z Challenge posts, my book reviews had to be put on hold throughout April.
The Bad Place by Dean Koontz, My Review
Blurb from The Back Cover
Frank Pollard awakens in an alley, knowing nothing but his name and that he is in danger.
Over the next few days he develops a fear of sleep because when he wakes he finds blood on his hands and bizarre and terrifying objects on his pockets.
When a distraught and desperate Frank begs husband and wife detective team, Bobby and Julie Dakota, to get to the bottom of his mysterious, amnesiac fugues, it seems a simple job. But they are drawn into ever-darkening realms, where they encounter the nightmare, hate-filled figure stalking Frank. And their lives are threatened, as is that of Julie’s gentle, Down’s-syndrome brother, Thomas.
To Thomas, death is the “bad place” from which there is no return. But as each of them ultimately learns, there are equally bad places in the world of the living, places so steeped in evil that, in a contrast, death seems almost to be a relief…
My Thoughts on The Book
The Bad Place is Dean Koontz at his best – fast paced, action packed, and with plenty of supernatural suspense.
Frank’s character is an interesting one. I felt myself move from being suspicious of him at the start of the book and somewhere along the way I came to sympathise with him.
Bobby and Julie are great characters, a true team and Dean Koontz writes their relationship amazingly well.
I also thought he did a really good job with the twins. The twins are two overtly sexual women who have a major feline obsession, and they are so creepy. The scenes about them are guaranteed to make your skin crawl.
Conclusion and Rating
The Bad Place is a fantastic read that will hook you from page one and won’t let go until you reach the very last page. 4/5

I read a LOT of Dean Koontz when I was a teenager and in my 20s. I tried reading Intensity again a couple of years ago and couldn’t do it. Apparently his stuff is much more violent than I realized–I seem to have had no problem with it when I was younger but I can’t deal with it anymore.

It’s funny because his books are kind of violent but he does it in sort of a subtle way. My initial response to this comment was going to be that the book isn’t really violent, but when I thought about it, actually it is quite violent. I think it’s because there’s usually a good plot line as well as the violence that you don’t always see it straight away if that makes sense!

I’ve never read any of his stuff. I should probably at some point.

He’s really good, definitely worth a read!
