Feng shui teaches us techniques to invite good fortune and prosperity into our homes by harmonizing our environment. Our surroundings have a great influence on how we feel and act. You cannot succeed if you feel agitated and stressed all the time. If you have done your best to decorate your home but still get an uncomfortable feeling there, you may have unintentionally made some feng shui decor blunders. Luckily, you can effortlessly modify these faults by making some adjustments. Here, we give you the five common mistakes and the ways to avoid them.
Mistake #1: Incorrect Furniture Positioning
One of the most common mistakes is the incorrect furniture placement. Crowding your house with furniture will leave an insufficient empty area for free flow of the positive energy. Placing the significant furniture items, such as the sofa or the bed, with their backs against the door or windows, is bad feng shui. Lining up all your furniture against a wall is terrible too. Putting the TV or laptop in the bedroom or the living area is a bad idea.
Feng shui requires you to have minimalistic furniture design with the key furniture pieces in the commanding positions. Have a circular seating arrangement to encourage communication and bonding between family members. Design cosy and friendly spaces with minimum electronic devices.
Mistake #2: Cluttered House
The worst thing disrupting the positive energy in your home is the clutter lying around. Sometimes, you collect unnecessary things over the time, which disturb the balance of your home. Hence, get rid of all the useless stuff to make space for new things. Make it a habit to regularly sort out the mess and repair the broken things. Keep your closets and cabinets well organized. Don’t let the dishes pile up in your sink or laundry from loading up in the basket. Declutter your house to make it a peaceful retreat where you can relax.
Mistake #3: Wrong Display
Another major mistake is to display things that you don’t like or don’t want in your life. Keeping hurtful things is not going to do to you any good. Collecting these negative things gives your home a negative vibe. Discard these upsetting items and replace them with the beautiful and meaningful things that you love. Hanging your art pieces in a straight line takes away the positive energy. Be creative and arrange them in an artistic way at different levels to boost up the energy flow.
Mirrors can enhance your room and open up the closed spaces if placed at the right spots. Never put two mirrors facing each other or a mirror right in front of the main door or your bed.
Spiky plants and wilted flowers radiate adverse energy into the surroundings. If you like to keep plants, ensure to take care of them. Similarly, fake and dried flowers don’t have a good vibe. Replace them with natural and colourful flowers.
Mistake #4: Unsuitable Colour
Choosing the wrong colour for your home can have such a negative impact on your mood and emotional state. You may think that painting your room in a bright shade can uplift the atmosphere. But it can have an opposite effect if it is the wrong feng shui shade for that room. You must know ‘what is the room used for’ and ‘who uses the room most’, to identify the kind of energy required in that room. Only then you can decide the colour that is most suitable for that room. The fundamental feng shui principle is to stick with neutral earthy tones with pops of colour in few areas.
Mistake #5: Dark Spaces
Having dark and gloomy areas in your home sucks away all the beneficial energy from your home. It can make you feel sad and depressed for no reason. Hence, try to brighten up every corner of your home. Move the furniture and curtains away from the windows. Let the natural light pour in from all the possible places. Have several ceiling lights and lamps to spread soft light throughout your home.

Really interesting to read this with some (limited) prior knowledge of feng shui. We were recently given a spikey cacti. It’s going outside, tucked away! And I’ve checked the position of our decorative mirror too! Thanks for this Sadia 🙂

Some great advice here. Not just good for feng sui. It’s also a lot of good sense to have your home positive and decluttered. Lovely post.

Oh I love the concept of feng shui – I, too, love interior design and love your point on not keeping anything which has a negative vibe – it definitely will not bring positivity. Thank you for sharing #BloggerClubUK
Debbie, My Random Musings
I agree, if something feels negative, it’s definitely not something you want around!

I’m quite a fan of dark, gothic feeling rooms so that’s what I need to work on!

I’m sure so much of this is common sense too – who would put furniture with backs against windows, it just FEELS all wrong. Also fake flowers uurgh can’t breathe properly when i see those. Having said that i have alot to learn such as leaving handbags on the floor in hallway (just so I wont lose mobile). My OH is a minimalist so no danger of getting cluttered thank goodness. #bloggerclubUK
Debbie, My Random Musings
I’m a bit of a minimalist myself, but I also have a habit of leaving my handbag out! And I’m not a fan of fake flowers either, they always remind me of something a magician pulls out of a hat!
The Tale of Mummyhood
This is a really interesting post, I found myself looking around my room noticing things we have done wrong. I’m in rearrange mode now!

Hi Debbie, thank you for featuring this post by Sadia. I only said this morning that our house needs a good clean and decluttering, it’s that time of year when dust drift start appearing and everything is everywhere. Maybe if we can in-cooperate a little extra positive energy into the house people will start being a little more tidy!
xx
Debbie, My Random Musings
It’s definitely that time of year isn’t it! I love a good declutter and a spring clean too 🙂 That would be great! x
