I discovered The Stranger In My Home by accident, and I have to say, I’m so pleased I did. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Adele Parks, but this is the first of her books I’ve read, and I’m sure it won’t be the last.
The Stranger In My Home by Adele Parks
Blurb From the Back Cover
Alison is lucky and she knows it. She has the life she always craved, including a happy home with Jeff and their brilliant, vivacious teenage daughter, Katherine – the absolute centre of Alison’s world.
Then a knock at the door ends life as they know it.
Fifteen years ago, someone else took Alison’s baby from the hospital. And now Alison is facing the unthinkable.
The daughter she brought home doesn’t belong to her.
When you have everything you dreamed of, there is everything to lose.
My Thoughts on The Book
It was actually the tag line “I thought she was my daughter. I was wrong.” that attracted me to this book. It just has a certain ring to it.
The Stranger In My Home centres around a family who find out that the daughter they have raised for 15 years isn’t actually their biological daughter due to a hospital mix up. And to make matters worse, they learn that the girl may have inherited a mutated gene that dramatically increases her risk of getting terminal cancer. Can you imagine how you would feel in Alison’s (the teenager’s mother and main character) situation?
The story is told from Alison’s view point. Alison isn’t particularly likeable, but I think that actually adds to the story, and as it unfolds, and you learn more about her, you start to understand why she behaves so strangely. I think Alison is someone that makes a great character, and keeps the story interesting, but if you knew her in real life, you would want to shake her.
I don’t want to spoil the story, so I won’t go into detail, but the twist ending is fantastic.
Conclusion and Rating
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed The Stranger In My Home. It was one of those books where I wanted to get to the end to see how it all turned out, but at the same time, I didn’t want to finish it.
It is reasonably fast-paced with plenty going on and a good selection of characters. There are a few plot holes, but it’s supposed to be fiction not real life. In all honesty, the story was good enough that I didn’t notice the major hole until after I had finished reading the book and sat down to write the review, so it definitely doesn’t spoil the story. 4.5/5
The Stranger In My Home is available on Amazon now for the bargain price of £1.99.
