As you all know I have a love of reading and books are something I regularly talk about here. Just last week I shared the 10 books you should read right now.
This started for me as a very young child, and I think encouraging that love of reading in children is such an important thing to do.
However, as someone with no children, I don’t feel like I know enough about children’s books to share some of the better ones that will develop a child’s love of books.
You can then imagine my delight when I was contacted by the lovely Elisha from Mom on The Blog who shares my views on encouraging children to read and wanted to share a post here about books that will encourage your children to read.
Here are her recommendations:
10 Books That Will Encourage Your Children To Read More by Elisha
As a mom and an Early childhood educator I know how important it is to instil the love of reading early on into our children. Studies show that children who are grade level reading by third grade have better chances of graduating high school.
I have put together a list of books that I know will catch your child’s love of reading (click the titles to view the books on Amazon).
1 Harold and The Purple Crayon
This book is written by Crocket Johnson. I love this book because of the way the story is told from Harold’s view. In the story Harold thinks about what he needs and he draws it. This book teaches kids to problem solve.
2 Goodnight Moon
This book is written by Margaret Wise. I chose this book because of the calming nature this book has which makes it a great read for bed time. I also love that pictures in the story go from colour to black and white. This contrast in colour draws in the child eyes.
3 The Mitten
This book is written by Jan Brett. I love a great Folktale for children as it helps explain a lesson in way children can understand and that is true in this story. This is a cautionary tale about a grandmother that warns against white mittens but her grandson insists. This book has beautiful illustrations and hidden images in the pages. Your children will enjoy finding the hidden images in the book pages.
4 Miss Rumphius
This story is written by Barbara Cooney and a winner of the American book award. The illustrations in this book are painted in acrylics. This story is about a young girl who wants to travel the world and eventually live by the sea but, her grandfather has a request.
5 The Very Hungry Caterpillar
This story is a classic written by Eric Carle. Eric Carle always has the most eye-catching illustrations in his stories that will draw your child in.
6 The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse
This story is also written and illustrated by Eric Carle. I love this story because it shows children that art doesn’t have to fit in a box. He encourages the children to make their own art.
7 We’re Going on A Bear Hunt
This story is written by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury. This book is a national bestseller for a good reason. This book takes little ones on an adventure they will never forget.
8 Don’t Push The Button
This story is written by Bill Cotter. This book made this list because it is one of my child’s favourites and a favourite in my classroom as well. The children love this book because it is an interactive story.
9 The Day The Crayons Quit
This book is written by Drew Daywalt who has a couple of other very entertaining books. I love the art in this book. It is simple but eye catching. All children love reading what the crayons have to say.
10 Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain
This tale is written by Verna Aardema. Can I just say you will not regret this story and its breath-taking illustrations. I love adding multi-cultural books to our library. This tale about a drought on the Kapiti Plain in Africa is a beautiful folktale. My children love reading about how people live in different parts of the world.
I hope you enjoy reading these books with your little ones and I know your children will love them as well 😊

I was brought up being told that reading was one of the most important things you can do for your kids so we read a lot in our house! This post is fab – we’ve already read a good few of these but there are one or two that I haven’t heard of and will definitely be checking out!
Eric Carle’s stuff is just fab – his ‘Slowly Slowly Said The Sloth’ is another of my kids’ faves – he writes with such simplicity yet such impact.
Thank you for getting the message out there how massively important reading is!!!
