I stumbled across an Adele Parks book on Amazon late last year, and something about it caught my attention. Since then, I’ve read quite a few of her books and she is now one of my favourite authors.
I’ve just finished About Last Night. I’ve then got a couple of books to read that are waiting on reviews and then I’ll be diving into Whatever it Takes.
Before we start on the review, I just want to point out that the book didn’t come bashed like that – I took it on holiday and the cover got a bit squished in my case.
Book Review: About Last Night by Adele Parks
Blurb from The Back Cover
How far would you go to save your best friend?
For thirty years, best friends Steph and Pip have been through thick and thin. Selfless and trusting, there’s nothing they would not do for one another. Until a few simple words change everything.
“I need you to say that I was with you.”
Steph, eternally solid and dependable, is begging her friend to lie to the police as she’s desperately trying to conceal not one but two scandalous secrets to protect her family. Pip, self-consigned to the role of scatty hot-head, is overwhelmed; she’s normally the one asking for help in a crisis.
Steph’s perfect life will be torn apart unless Pip agrees to this lie. But lying will jeopardise everything Pip’s recently achieved after years of struggle. It’s a big ask.
So what would you do?
My Thoughts on The Book
About Last Night is a nice, easy read that’s perfect for a holiday or your daily commute. Interesting enough to get into, but not so deep that you have to be immersed in it completely.
When I first started reading the book, I wasn’t a huge fan of either Pip or Steph (particularly Pip), but as the book went on, these women grew on me, and by the end, I felt as though they were both nice enough people that found themselves in a bad place at one time or another and I found myself rooting for them.
From the get go, their love for one another is clear. They have a bit of a co-dependant relationship, but it’s not so bad that it’s toxic.
Some of the minor characters are really interesting. I particularly liked the character of Kirsten – although she’s not someone I would want to be friends with, I liked her honest thought process. She knows what she wants in life, and how to get it.
I also really liked Robbie. He was a realistic version of the “knight in shining armour” character by providing sensible advice rather than being a billionaire all action hero.
Conclusion and Rating
About Last Night will make you think about your friendships. At first glance, when reading the blurb on the back cover, my first thought was “well of course I’d lie for my best friend”. As the story unfolds though, it makes you question whether or not you actually would if faced with this situation.
About Last Night was a little predictable, but overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend it for anyone who wants an interesting read about how even the strongest of friendships are tested. 4/5.
About Last Night is available now on Amazon.

I’ve never read any of her stuff, I assumed she was a bit chick-lit. But this premise of this book sounds really intriguing. Adding it to my Goodreads!

I’m not big on chick-lit and I’ve really enjoyed her books – The Stranger in My Home is my favourite of hers

I do like Adele Parks. It is interesting to see how her style has changed between her earliest books and the more recent ones. I particularly liked The State We’re In, and The Stranger in my Home, even if they both had elements which were a bit far fetched! #BloggerClubUK

Those are my two favourites by far! I couldn’t put The Stranger in My Home down!

Mmm this does sound like a fab book to read on the tube to and from work. Although my fav type of books have more twists and turns than fusilli pasta – it’s always nice to find something easy to read that can be picked up and put down a fair bit. An interesting question about would you lie for your best friend. I might just have to give this one a go. #Bloggerclubuk

I’ve read this one, I don’t really know how I came across it because it’s not my usual read. It’s a nice easy book though, the story kept me interested and whilst I didn’t really like the characters, at all, I did care about what happened #bloggerclubuk

Nice sounding book. I’ve been addicted to historical dramas FOR YEARS but I’m reading a murder mystery and I’m really enjoying it. So, I am now officially open to all genres. Nice review – thanks for sharing this book with us x #BloggerClubUK

This sounds like a great read although I must admit between the kids and the blog I have very little time to read. I didn’t even bring a book on holiday with me! xx

I can’t imagine how you’d fit in reading with everything else! Although you have to have a book to read around the pool when hubby’s on parent duty lol x
