I’ve had my Facebook page for around eighteen months now. For the first seventeen months, I updated it with my blog posts and the occasional quote and that was pretty much it.
I had a link to it on my blog and I tweeted that I had it, but I did no active promotion of it and gave it very little attention. Consequently, it grew very slowly and one month ago, I had 300 page likes.
A month ago, I decided to focus on it a bit more and try to grow it. I now have over 1300 likes.
Here’s how I gained a thousand Facebook page likes in a month:
Run A Giveaway
Running a giveaway on your Facebook page is a good way to build page likes quickly. A lot of people say this doesn’t get you followers who are interested in your page.
However, what it does get you is interactions.
Facebook really is a numbers game. The more interactions a post gets, the wider the reach. The wider the reach, the better chance you have of people seeing your page in their feeds and liking it.
And what’s to say they won’t be interested in your page? Just because someone enters a giveaway doesn’t mean they aren’t also interested in parenting tips, recipes, fashion, or any of the thousands of other things you might blog about.
Try to choose a prize that somehow relates to your blog’s target audience to really appeal to potential readers.
With a Facebook giveaway, you can’t stipulate following your page as an entry condition – in fact, the only entry condition you’re allowed to stipulate is to comment on the post. Again this builds interaction.
What you can do is just pop a line in the post asking people to like your page if they like the giveaway and want to be sure not to miss out on anymore.
You must also include a disclaimer notifying people that Facebook aren’t running or endorsing the giveaway, and it’s best to have clear guidelines for anyone who wants to enter displayed too.
I ran a Facebook giveaway for some make-up (around £50 worth) and gained over 600 likes in the two weeks it ran for.
I choose this because my blog is primarily aimed at women. Of course I could have gone deeper into my niche, but I also wanted an appealing prize that wouldn’t cost a fortune in postage costs.
Invite Your Friends to Like Your Page
So many people don’t do this. Of course you don’t want to spam your friends all of the time, but invite the ones who you think would actually be interested in whatever topic you blog about.
You can then ask the ones who choose to like the page to share it with their friends too. Depending on the number of Facebook friends you have, this might not make a huge difference, but it all helps. And your friends are much more likely to interact with your future posts and help you build that all important reach.
Share a Mixture of Content
For the seventeen months my Facebook page stood stagnant, I only ever shared my blog posts and as I mentioned, the odd other thing. If you only ever blog about one thing, this is going to get old quickly.
Share other people’s posts about similar topics, share funny videos and memes. Pretty much anything you think your audience would enjoy.
A lot of bloggers look for viral content to share, but I often find these things pop up so many times on your newsfeed that people get sick of seeing them, so I try to share things that are funny and/or interesting but not on my news feed five times in the first twenty posts.
Keep in mind that the Facebook algorithm gives more juice to videos and photos (and even just plain text) than those posts with links in them so to keep growing your reach, you need a good volume of content that isn’t taking people off the site to view it.
Interact with People on Your Page
By far the best way to do this is using Facebook Lives – the Facebook algorithm gives them the highest ranking and they will be visible to a lot more people than other post types. Ask questions and when people answer you in the comments, acknowledge them as you go. If someone asks a question, answer them as you go.
If, however, you’re like me and the thought of doing a Facebook Live terrifies you, there are still other ways to interact – even if you go for the lives, these things are still worth doing.
Share some chatty updates on your page:
- Maybe you’ve been on a really fun day out and want to share something about it.
- Maybe you could share funny stories from your day.
- Maybe share some un-styled, behind the scenes styles photos.
Anything that gives people a sense of the person behind the page.
Ask some fun questions or create a poll. People like to interact on Facebook – give them a reason to. It can feel awkward at first, especially if you don’t get a response, but keep going and it will come.
Once people do start liking your page and leaving comments, respond to them. No one likes to feel like they are talking to an empty room.
Think about it as if you’re the one commenting: Would you be more likely to leave another comment if you got a reply or if you didn’t?
I hope these four tips help you to start growing your Facebook page and connecting with your followers. Good luck.

Thanks so much for these tips! I’ve been really focusing on Instagram as my main outlet for the moment but I know these will come in handy when I want to give my Facebook a bit of a boost. At the moment I’m just like you – sharing my usual content and interacting with mainly my friends on there. It was a big moment to share my blog on there with them already!
Debbie, My Random Musings
It’s hard to grow more than one network at a time. It’s still good interacting with your friends there though because it shows people like what you’re posting and it gets more visibility

I have to admit I totally ignore my Facebook page but it is still my best place for interaction with my posts. This week I paid for FB to push one of my posts and it went bonkers! I got 400 views yesterday for that one post! Whilst I wont pay again, it has shown me that I need to invest more time in FB so thank you for this. #Anythinggoes
Debbie, My Random Musings
That’s brilliant, well done! I do sometimes succumb to paid posts but it’s usually for my books

I find Facebook is a real slow burner and the algorithm sucks! Well done on the increase though, good old giveaways hey?! #anythinggoes
Debbie, My Random Musings
I hate the algorithms on FB – it’s like they sat down and thought “this system works well, how can we ruin it?” Haha I love a giveaway or two!

Thanks Debs. My facebook page has been languishing for a month or so with about 7 followers since I set it up. Pen x
Debbie, My Random Musings
It’s hard to grow because of the stupid algorithms, but it is possible, as long as you’re willing to accept it’s kind of slow x
The Moderate Mum
I really need a Facebook strategy! I will take all these points on board #AnythingGoes
Jeremy@ThirstyDaddy
I seem to lose one for every two I gain. Try to post at least one thing a day to keep it in people’s feeds, but as has been said, its slow going #anythinggoes
Debbie, My Random Musings
It really is slow! So frustrating at times

I need to work on all of my social followings and I was struggling to decide which one to focus on first. I thought Facebook might be the hardest to combat but after reading this I might be wrong. Thanks for the tips. #BloggerClubUK

Thanks for these tips. They’re all really useful and things I hadn’t thought too much about. I’m finding FB a slow grower and it’s not really my favourite platform but it’s often my biggest driver of traffic x #bloggerclubuk

This is all really applicable to me right now. I used to be like you but have really tried upping my game over the past couple of weeks. Put your tip about type of content into practice tonight, instead of dropping a blog link I added a photo and put the link within the post and it’s already getting a better reach than previous posts. #AnythingGoes
Debbie, My Random Musings
Fantastic news! Glad the tips are working for you 🙂

Hi, thanks for sharing these tips. I need to be a lot more active on FB #bloggerclubuk

Interaction is key and actually inviting people to like your page, I avoided that for so long and I don’t know why #bloggerclubuk
Debbie, My Random Musings
Same here – I’ve still only invited a handful of friends who I think would actually be interested
Susie/So Happy In Town
Really interesting tips Debbie. My FB page has stayed pretty stagnant at 360 followers for months now and I just didn’t know how to grow it. Thank you #BloggerClubUK

You now have a new FB follower…! I forget that even though I can’t add my actual friends, I can still add my blogger friends! Hmmm I wonder what I can giveaway – a sex toy perhaps?! 😂
Debbie, My Random Musings

I love FB but I hate their algorithms lol

Great ideas, one of the things on my massive to-do list is to do a Facebook Live as i have never done one and the other thing is to start sharing other peoples content as the small amount of times i have done it, i can see it brings more people to my page and more people ‘see’ my post! 🙂

I’m determined to do a live by the end of the year. I don’t know where I’m going to find the courage to do that like lol

It’s such an awkward network – damned algorithm!
