I first came across the story of Peggy the Doll about a year ago. I remember reading something about her on a blog or somewhere and thinking “yeah right”.
After that, I pretty much forgot about her until recently, when I read Demonic Toys by John Harker, which features Peggy amongst a host of other haunted objects. It got my curiosity going and I had to know more about Peggy’s story.
And who better to tell it than Jayne Harris, the paranormal investigator who looked after Peggy and brought her story into the public eye?
Peggy the Doll by Jayne Harris: My Review
Blurb from The Back Cover
“That doll nearly ruined by life. I hope God protects you all” JW (first owner of Peggy the Doll).
Now residing in Zak Bagans’ Haunted Museum, Peggy the Doll is considered one of the most haunted objects in the world.
Paranormal investigator Jayne Harris tells the terrifying true story of the case that changed the way she views the supernatural forever.
Forget what you thought you knew about the spirit world. When a doll is accused of causing heart attacks, strokes, and even death…this is no ordinary haunting.
My Thoughts on The Book
Peggy the Doll tells Jayne’s story from the moment Peggy entered her life. It details the spirits surrounding Peggy and the effects those spirits have on people who come into contact with her – and not just physically. Looking at her photograph alone has caused some alarming results in some people.
I love the way Jayne writers. She writes as though she’s talking to a friend. That, coupled with the fascinating story, drew me in from the beginning and I read the book in one sitting. I read it in the middle of the night which perhaps wasn’t my best idea as this book is seriously unsettling to say the least.
It raises more questions than it answers, but that’s not unusual for books detailing the paranormal.
The book is also filled with first person accounts from other paranormal investigators, psychic mediums and members of the public who have been affected by Peggy in one way or another.
Conclusion and Rating
The book isn’t perfect. There are a few errors, but to be honest, because the subject is so fascinating, they didn’t really register except on a peripheral level.
If you believe in spirits of any form, this will definitely keep you interested. If you’re a sceptic, it’s still a fun read, and who knows, you might even change your mind.
Well written, informative, and truly chilling in parts. 5/5
And Now What You’re Dying To Know
Do I Believe The Story?
I’ll start by saying that I’ve seen and heard enough personally to believe that spirits exist. But that doesn’t mean I blindly believe anything someone tells me or anything in a so called “true story” book or movie. They are usually horribly exaggerated, but something tells me this one isn’t.
At first, when reading the first person accounts, I was sceptical. It could be coincidence, or the power of suggestion, or even the person’s own fear playing tricks on them.
What started to convince me was the sheer volume of reports from people after seeing pictures or videos of Peggy.
There where just too many of them to be coincidence, and a lot of the reports were so similar and from people all over the world who had never met each other. Some had never even heard of Peggy when they stumbled across her, so they had no reason to already fear her.
What really convinced me, was that some of the people who were affected by Peggy were mediums and investigators who are around paranormal entities a lot. And some of them refused to even be in the same room as her.
Did She Have An Effect On Me?
Before I looked at the photos of Peggy (not the book cover, I believe that’s a drawing that only holds a small likeness to her so please don’t panic that you’ve seen the cover) I expected her to be creepy looking – that wasn’t the case at all. She’s actually pretty cute as dolls go (although she does have extremely piercing eyes).
I felt kind of drawn to look at her, even once I’d turned the page I kept going back and I don’t know why. I’m not saying that was anything supernatural – it was more than likely my own perverse curiosity daring me to look again and see if anything happened.
I did find out later in the book that Peggy can trigger a warm, almost maternal reaction from some people. Maybe that was it. Maybe I got the nice spirit.
After finishing the book, naturally I had to go and watch some of Jayne’s videos. Again, I felt kind of drawn to look at Peggy, but I didn’t have any adverse effects. I’m not going to link to the videos here, because, quite frankly, I don’t want to be responsible if anything does happen to anyone, but if you want to watch them, they’re easy enough to find. Just search for Peggy the Doll on YouTube.
Writing this post, I do have a bit of a headache and feel kind of dizzy and a little sick. Is that Peggy, or is it just a case of too much screen time? I don’t know, but considering I’m often on my laptop for over fourteen hours a day and today I’ve only been on it for four hours so far, it makes me wonder.
In the past, I’ve done extensive research on Demons and possession and some pretty weird stuff has happened during that time and strange things often happen when I write about those kinds of things, so maybe this effect is something else entirely.
Whatever it is, it’s interesting to note.

Sounds terrifying! Dolls freak me out a bit as it is; I think Peggy would finish me off!!

If normal dolls freak you out Peggy would definitely do that lol

Although I have a fear of dolls, this seems like a book I could get into. I might consider buying a copy for myself!

Sounds interesting but I’m more into historical novels! Thanks for the review tho – always good to get to know other genres.

Ooh, I saw Zak Bagans showing Peggy off. It’s nice that she is now part of his museum. I didn’t know there was a book on her though, that’s pretty neat.

I didn’t see the show but I think it’s nice she ended up there too

I love things like this. I’m never sure if they are real or not, but reading other people’s accounts is fascinating.

Me too – they are so addictive and I always find myself digging for more info lol

Possessed dolls really creep me out. Ever since I saw a movie called Dolls when I was a teenager, and Chucky when I was a kid, dolls scare the crap out of me. I do believe in spirits and even if this story isn’t 100% correct, the idea that even the doll’s picture could do something is enough to make me stay away. It sounds like a very interesting read though. Maybe if they make a movie I’ll watch that, lol. Thanks so much for hosting #anythinggoes

It’s really intriguing isn’t it – I would totally watch the movie too lol.

I have to say, I don’t believe in anything supernatural. I like a creepy doll for the weirdness factor, but nothing more. I’m sure there will be lots of others out there who will love the book though!

It’s a great read. I think even as someone who took it as fiction rather than fact it would still be an interesting read.
Musings of a tired mummy...zzz...
I’m a little bit scared now! But want to go and look at the pic of the real doll… #anythinggoes

Haha, that was my exact reaction!

Hi Everyone,
Thank you first of all for reviewing my book!
Secondly thank you to everyone for your interest in Peggy the Doll. As those of you who have read the book will know, a lot went on behind the scenes with that doll over a period of about 18 months that made me re-evaluate my beliefs around what I considered paranormal!
Although she’s now in Zak’s museum I’m still involved in her case, and I’m hoping that Zak will soon update everyone with what’s been happening as she’s still causing some odd things to happen.
Anyway, didn’t want to read and run so thanks again 🙂
Best Wishes (oh and Merry Christmas to all!)
