Anyone who has been reading this blog for a while will know that I love Michael Grant’s books, so you can imagine my excitement when Monster was released. I was so excited I managed to pre-order it twice (duh) so of course the only thing to do was a blog giveaway for the spare copy.
Monster by Michael Grant: My Review
Blurb from The Back Cover
When the dome came down, they thought it was the end of the troubles. But it was just the beginning.
Shade Darby witnessed events that day at Perdido Beach with devastating consequences and vowed never to feel that powerless again. Now, four years later, she gets her hands on a part of the meteor that began it all – and that’s when she changes.
Trouble is, Shade’s not the only one mutating and the authorities can’t allow these superpowers to go unchecked…
My Thoughts on The Book
Monster is a continuation of the Gone series. If you haven’t read the Gone series (you really should because it’s fantastic) but you could read Monster as a stand alone book and still be able to follow it. Monster gives enough background throughout the story that anyone unfamiliar with the characters in Gone will be able to follow the story, but not so much as to be annoying to anyone that has read it.
Shade is a really interesting main character – damaged and stubborn but extremely loyal and with so many mixed emotions running beneath her hard faced exterior. She is relatable and it won’t be long before you end up rooting for her, even if she is a little frustrating at times.
Shade’s friends, Cruz and Malik, are great supporting characters and the relationship between them and Shade keeps you guessing. Sometimes, it feels as though Shade is manipulating them, and other times, it’s clear she really thinks a lot of them.
The story line raises some interesting questions – how far would you go to exact your revenge? Would you allow power to corrupt you, or would you use it for good? And who or what is watching?
Conclusion and Rating
Monster is a fast paced, well written story that will grab you from the first page and not let go. 5/5
