Last year, I signed up for a challenge on Facebook that’s aim was to make an extra £1,000 before Christmas. It started around the beginning of October and I figured it would be easy enough to do.
Over the first couple of days, I watched the group, checking out the daily tasks to start making extra money. There where things like survey sites, job spotter apps etc. I was a bit sceptical as to how I could make any real money from these things, but I figured I’d give it a go.
I joined the recommended sites and began to get busy. Over the first couple of days, I spent around eight hours working on the various tasks – and I made the grand total of £3.36. In eight hours. It should have been called how to lose money and the will to live by Christmas.
But I did learn something valuable doing those first few days of the challenge. In fact, I learned two things:
The first one was that people want to make extra money for Christmas and will jump through whatever hoops you give them, so if you join all of these penny making sites and get affiliate links, just getting people to sign up and start making coppers can easily get you an extra grand for Christmas. That’s not a dig at the girl running the challenge – fair play to her for spotting an easy way to make extra money and using it (and in fairness, some people in the group for the challenge really did make a lot of money).
The second and most important thing I learned was that while I always say I don’t have the time to take on extra work in the run up to Christmas, that just isn’t true. I found eight hours easily enough when I had something to motivate me. That showed me that I could fit in another client. I did, and I smashed the goal, making well over £2,000 extra before Christmas.
So although the challenge didn’t pan out as I expected it to, it did show me that I could find the time to make extra money. And if I can do that, so can you.
Forget about the sites that give you pennies for a lot of your time – focus on something bigger that will make you real money. This will motivate you to keep finding the time. Everyone can find an hour per day, no matter how busy you are. Go to bed an hour later, or get up an hour earlier.
Use that hour a day to take on an extra client, buy something in bulk and resell it, make something to sell, create resources and eBooks – literally anything you can think of. And you will make money. You might even find your side gig so lucrative that you can switch out your job and make more money from your own business.

My very first blog was on a site called Diaryland. I believe they still exist. After about four years there, I started blogging on Blogger instead, and tried putting ads and all sorts of other things on my new blog that were promised to make me some “real” money. In approximately ten years, I made about $100. Not exactly an example of getting rich quick, which of course is what everybody said would happen. I eventually took all the ads down, and don’t use my blog for anything other than my own stories and observations.

I think the thing they don’t tell you about is the massive following you need to make real money that way. But there’s lots of ways to make money without relying on the blog

I have seen and signed up for a few of those sites myself and I never saw a single penny. One survey site I spent two full days on. I had the app on my phone so I could do the surveys where ever I was but it only took more time than I had and I got nothing for it. I’m still trying to figure out how to make extra money with my writing as it has gone no where but I’ve also had bad experiences with potential clients who seem to only want me to give them free advertisement on my blog. It’s very frustrating. Thank God I have still have my day job lol
