I really let my book reviews slide last year, and I found I missed writing them, so this year, I will be doing at least one book review a month. They will go live on the last Saturday of the month (and maybe a few in other places too). This month’s is The Foster Child by Jenny Blackhurst.
The Foster Child by Jenny Blackhurst
Blurb from The Back Cover
When child psychologist Imogen Reid takes on the case of 11-year-old Ellie Atkinson, she refuses to listen to warnings that Ellie is dangerous.
Ellie was the only survivor of a fire that killed her family. Imogen is convinced she’s just a sad and angry child struggling to cope with her loss.
But Ellie’s foster parents and teachers are afraid of her. When she gets upset, bad things seem to happen. And as Imogen gets closer to Ellie, she may be putting herself in danger…
My Thoughts on The Book
I’ll admit I judged this book by it’s cover – but I wasn’t disappointed. The Foster child has a similar theme to Case 39, but it’s different enough to keep you guessing.
Ellie is a sympathetic character, and I soon found myself rooting for her. I couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like to be so young and such an outcast. Adults and children alike bully Ellie, and before long, I found myself wishing she would get her revenge on certain characters.
Imogen is a likeable character, and although I sometimes felt as though Ellie was a project Imogen was using to rectify her past mistakes, her heart was in the right place and she really does care about Ellie.
Conclusion and Rating
I really enjoyed The Foster Child, so much so that it made the top ten books I read in 2017 list. 5/5.

Oh I think I would also pick this book up based on the covers design and the blurb on the back cover. I shall be adding it to my reading list #BloggerClubUK
I always judge a book by it’s cover, even though I know you shouldn’t. But that’s part of it to me, it’s only the same as albums, sometimes you get a feel from the cover. I’ll be honest, I mostly read teen/children’s books as I find them much easier to get into haha #BloggerclubUK
I read loads of YA as well lol
Oooo this is just the sort of book my sons partner likes – I’ll pass this recommendation on, thanks x
popping back – I love a good read. thanks for hosting the #anythinggoes linky x
I remember this on your top 10, Debbie. This looks a great book and I will certainly go and get it if you recommend it as I think we enjoy the same sort of books. Thanks. #bloggerclubuk

Shevy
Oh. That looks right up my street
Interesting! Going to add it to my TBR list!
I always read the back and sometimes the inside cover before I decide to read a book. I’ll be honest here Debbie, based on the description I don’t like books that paint foster kids in a bad way. They have a bad enough reputation without a book fueling the fire. I can’t help that though. Personal experience. I would love to be a person who would give it a chance anyway but I probably won’t. Sorry.
I think the book actually does a good job of showing the opposite. Without giving too much away, the book for me, showed that the foster child was never really the problem.
Not sure I could read it. I am a big baby. This would give me nightmares! #bluggerclubUK
Oo this sounds like a gripping read – I’ll pop it on my list of books to read. This year I’m determined to read more 🙂 #BloggerClubUK
I can’t read scary stuff anymore or watch scary telly. Having kids has done funny things to me! I’d also worry that it puts foster children in a bad light. But maybe the blurb is misleading. Looking forward to some other reviews as I need some ideas!. #bloggerclubuk
Actually, I think this book does the opposite – for me, it showed that the foster child was never really the problem. The problems started long before she came along.
If it’s not Chip, Biff and Kipper then I don’t stand a chance of reading anything. It is about all my brain can take these days! #BloggerClubUK
Haha 🙂 I can’t believe Biff, Chip and Kipper are still going (and yeah I know that makes me sound ancient lol)
I always judge books and movies by their covers. Sadly. I am just always hoping that whoever they took on as their designer does justice to their work. This sounds like a fun read! I’ll definitely look into it!

It sounds like an interesting story – I’m adding to my list. 🙂

I really enjoyed it 🙂
Very intriguing I do love a thriller/mystery! #BloggerClubUK
Well I guess as a person that was fostered I would instantly gravitate to this one. Always good to have new books come to my attention especially as I am finally finding time to read #BloggerClubUK
It’s a fab read – it was one of those that stayed with me after I’d finished it
I love a mystery that keeps me guessing, I appreciated your response to Michelle’s comment as I wouldn’t like people to not give foster children a chance due to negative books, but it sounds like it doesn’t in the end which would make me more inclined to read it.
It’s a really good read. I don’t want to give too much away about the book, but I really felt like the book was saying the opposite to foster children being the problem.
This book looks good! I’ve put it on my list! #AnythingGoes
Sounds like a good read. I’ll add it to my list which seems to be growing by the second!:)
