Do you sometimes find that you know exactly what you want to do with a project, or within the next chapter of your life but fear of the unknown holds you back?
I felt that way for so long about becoming a full time writer. As stupid as it sounds, one of the biggest things holding me back wasn’t anything that you would imagine, such as what if I don’t make enough money to pay my bills (I had a plan in place for that). Instead it was the fear of being self employed and having to do my own tax return.
I eventually gave myself a good talking to, and I decided to just do it – and if it was too hard, I’d pay an accountant to do it for me. As it turns out, it wasn’t anywhere near the big deal I’d blown it up to be (which a bit of simple research would have shown me) and I was easily able to do it myself.
I’d like to share with you five things that will make almost anything you want to do possible:
Plan and Research
As I mentioned above, a bit of simple research would have shown me I had nothing to worry about. Research the areas that scare you and have a plan in place to deal with them.
Also, research any areas you don’t fully understand about the thing you want to do. And again put a plan in place to learn what you need to know, or gain the experiences you will need.
At this stage, it’s also worth crafting up a back-up plan. This isn’t an assumption that you will fail. It is a safety net that will allow you the freedom to chase your passion without putting so much pressure on yourself to succeed the first time.
Have a Positive Mindset
This might seem counter intuitive to having a plan B, but it really isn’t. Your plan B is just that – it’s a way to ensure you can chase your dream without putting yourself in danger of ending up in debt.
A positive mindset will help you on journey immensely. If you go into a new venture expecting to fail, it’s pretty much guaranteed that you will. Go into the same venture expecting to succeed and it’s much more likely to happen.
Your positivity will come across whenever you talk about your idea, and if that idea is anything to do with needing people to buy something from you, then that’s half of the battle.
Think about it: are you more likely to buy something from someone who is passionate and positive about what they are offering, or are you more likely to buy something from someone whose tone and body language tells you they aren’t confident in their product or service?
Work Hard
This one should be a no brainer, but it never fails to amaze me how many people think they can watch a webinar on something and that’s all there is too it. Sure webinars have their place – it’s always good to learn from people a couple of the rungs of the ladder ahead of you, but those people can only give you an idea of what you should be doing. They aren’t there to do the work for you. That’s on you.
Accept that you’re going to have put the work in and be willing to invest your time into your passion.
Work Smart
Of course you have to put time and effort into your venture, but make sure that you are funnelling your time and effort into the right places. Streamline your tasks so that you are working efficiently.
Plan your schedule so that similar tasks are grouped together so that you aren’t spending a lot of time getting set up for each task multiple times per day.
Make sure everything you do leads in the right direction- don’t allow yourself to get side tracked. Shiny object syndrome can affect us all, so make sure you are constantly asking yourself if the task at hand is bringing you closer to your end goal. If it isn’t, then move on to a task that will.
Keep Going
There will be times when chasing your passion is hard – harder than you ever imagined it would be. Times when you want to give up. Those are the times where it’s important to remind yourself of why you’re doing this in the first place. And of how far you’ve come.
And most importantly, it’s important to remember that everyone who has even been successful at anything has felt like this on more than one occasion. They might not all admit to it, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t felt it.
Push yourself and get through the hard time. And never give up on something that you want.
