It’s that time of the year again – April’s A-Z Blogging Challenge, where hundreds of bloggers from all over the world come together and blog their way through the alphabet.
If you would like to join me on the A-Z journey it’s not too late – simply choose a theme and blog every day in April (Monday-Friday and the last Sunday) with each post representing a letter of the alphabet – for example, day one, A, day two, B, etc.
2018 Theme – Creative Writing Character Prompts
This year, my theme is character prompts.
Character prompts are a good way to really get to know the characters you create and write about.
It’s always good to know as much as possible about your characters, and seeing how they will react in a situation they wouldn’t usually find themselves in is a good way to learn things about them that might surprise you.
This sort of exercise can show you things you didn’t know about your character, leading to a more well-rounded character with more layers, which makes for a much better experience for your readers.
If you aren’t currently working on any fiction, you can still use the character prompts as the basis for a short story, or throw an old character into these situations.
Are you taking part in the challenge? Let me know your theme in the comments 🙂
If you enjoy these exercises and you want more creative writing prompts, writing tips and support, join The Writer’s Den group on Facebook now.

Looking forward to the character prompts. Sounds like a fun way to flesh my characters out a bit more.
Thank you 🙂 I hope you enjoy them!
This sounds good, and helpful! Look forward to reading more.
Thank you 🙂
Oooo. That’s a good theme.
This year, I’m not doing it for my writing blog, but am doing it over on my personal blog about my chronic illness.
~Patricia Lynne aka Patricia Josephine~
Thank you 🙂 I’ve got you on my “to visit” list. I’ve switched it to your personal blog now (I didn’t even know you had another blog!)
I participated in the A to Z Challenge in 2014 and 2016, but I’m giving it a pass again this year. However, you’ve picked a great theme, and I’m looking forward to your April posts! In fact, the A to Z is how I found your blog to begin with.
I almost passed this year too but they brought the master list back so I couldn’t resist lol 🙂
Very interesting theme here, Debbie. As a fiction writer myself, I’d be very keenly following your blog. All the best.
Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoy the posts 🙂
Looking forward to reading your posts, after a year.
It’s lovely catching back up with everyone 🙂
Oh what a great idea. I’m looking forward to reading all about it. I wonder how many versions of this there are? #bloggerclubuk
Great post!!
I’m probably crazy to join in with our third baby being due on the 30th of March BUT you gotta push ya self right?! So I’m in! Makes sense to do it based on parenting so that’ll be my theme. Ooh I’m excited!
Plus your post has been super helpful for an idea I’ve got coming up, thanks for sharing lovey 🙂
#bloggerclubuk
Yayyy so pleased you’ll be joining in 🙂 And glad to have helped!
Wow this is a great idea -id love to join in although I feel like it might be biting off more than I can chew what with three kids and a stressful job… will definitely keep my eyes peeled for all the posts though! #Bloggerclubuk
It’s really fun but it’s a lot easier if you have the post written in advance 🙂
I love a well fleshed out character. It makes the story come alive! #bloggerclub
Great idea. I am going with one single character myself this time around. I’m really looking forward to reading your pieces.
Thank you 🙂 I loved your theme last year, looking forward to what you do this year!
How intriguing Debbie! My curiosity is piqued. Can’t wait to see your posts!
Thank you for dropping by my blog. I’ve got a mix of topics that I’ve bundled and am calling “Collecting Smiles”
Cheers!
Thank you, I hope you enjoy them 🙂
Might be helpful for me in the future. Will drop by to check it out in April.
Mine is “Poetry for a cause”
I’ll be sure to stop by 🙂
This sounds like such a great challenge! #BloggerClubUK
I’m always in awe of bloggers that take on these challenges to post blogs almost everyday for a period of time! Character prompts sounds like a really interesting theme #BloggerClubUK
I usually post daily anyway so I’m kind of cheating lol. Thank you 🙂
Sounds like a very good theme. Looking forward to posts. #BloggerClubUK
Thank you 🙂
Yes! I’ll definitely be checking this out. Every so often I search out writing prompts for great writing exercises. Some of my stories in April will be from writing prompts. My theme will be Geek Pride!
I love a writing prompt, it often sparks something off (usually something totally unrelated to the prompt like haha). I’m looking forward to your posts!
Looking forward to this theme Debbie!
Thank you 🙂
Oh I really like the sound of this challenge, I might have to give this a go myself! #bloggerclubUK
It’s a really fun challenge
Interesting idea, can’t wait to read more about it!
I kind of stumbled onto a fictional story. It was supposed to be an individual post, and it has extended to a handful of episodes so far. I make my characters up as I go, so it’ll be good to learn more about what to actually do!
It’s great when an idea comes to you like that!
Great idea for writing prompts! I love all my characters and think that often once you’ve nailed them the story can write itself (with the hard slog, rewrites, plot mapping lol! #BloggerClubUK
I totally agree – if you know your characters well enough, they lead you through their story 🙂
I’ve never heard of this A-Z – what a great idea and the character prompts will be really interesting to read about during April!

#AtoZChallenge Theme Reveal 2018 - A-Z Of Parenting - Jemma Malone
[…] This April I’m taking part in the #AtoZChallenge that many bloggers participate in. I first heard of this from @randommusings29 when I came across her wonderful blog post announcing her theme reveal: Which you can read here! […]
Great theme! I’ve added your blog to Feedly so I can follow you throughout the challenge. I’ll try to do some of the character prompts, it might help me with my WiP.
I hope they help!
Good luck!
