Anyone who has been reading the blog for a while will know that I’m a big fan of Mandasue Heller’s books, so when I was contacted to review her latest book, Save Me, naturally I jumped at the chance.
Save me by Mandasue Heller
Blurb from The Back Cover
When Ellie Fisher misses her train home one night, she has no idea that being in the right place at the wrong time will change her life forever.
That night, she comes across Gareth, a young man about to commit suicide, because as far as he’s concerned there is nothing left to live for. Risking her own safety, Ellie convinces Gareth that there is always something left. Her own story is no bed of roses, she explains, but she never gives up.
However, good deeds aren’t always paid the way we want. Has Ellie unwittingly put her life I danger, or is the real threat a lot closer to home.
My Thoughts on The Book
As always, Mandasue Heller’s writing style pulled me in from the very start of the book. Save Me is in her usual gritty style with no glitz or glamour, just the real life struggles of real life people.
While I really enjoyed the book, Ellie’s character made me want to scream (I seem to be feeling this way a lot lately – we need some strong female led books but that’s another story). Ellie is the only person in the book – and I am guessing the only person in the world (out of those that read the book) that doesn’t see the twist coming. For the record this isn’t a dig at the author – I think this is intended.
Matt, Ellie’s husband is a strange character – while he’s clearly wrong for Ellie, there are times I actually understand where he’s coming from (although I don’t for a second condone his actions).
By the end of the book, I wanted Ellie to walk away from it all and get her happy ending. I’m not going to spoil the ending by telling you if that happens or not though.
Conclusion and Rating
Save Me is a fab read for anyone who enjoys a well told story that pulls you in from page one and doesn’t let go. It’s fast paced with just the right amount of tension. Nothing is as it seems, which makes the book an interesting read. 4/5.
