Welcome to this year’s A-Z Blogging Challenge. My theme for this year is character prompts. Each day throughout April, you’ll find a new character prompt that relates to that day’s letter.
Day Eleven: K – Kill Time
Your character is offered a million pounds on the condition someone must die. They don’t have to kill the person, but they do have to choose who it will be.
Do they accept the deal? Why?
If so, who do they choose as their victim? Why?
Would knowing they had to kill the victim themselves made them more or less likely to agree? Why?
How do they feel afterwards? If they took the money, do they feel guilty? If they didn’t, do they regret that decision?
I’d love to read some of the scenarios you create. Email them to me at debbie@myrandommusings.co.uk and I’ll share some of my favourites over the coming months here on the blog.

There was a movie or Twilight Zone or something about a scenario like this. It had to do with a box. If the person opened the box, someone would die. Good prompts. I’m not sure the money would be worth it to me, knowing someone was going to die for it.

Proper moral dilemma here… am keeping this one to the side to ponder in less ‘hattered’ days! Not one for microfiction, this… YAM xx
Kristin
My character would chose the evil person who offered the choice as the victim.

Best answer so far!

Today, like right now my character needs money desperately and million dollars can save his life. he does accept the offer and kills that 101 year old grandma who has been bedridden for 3 years and has no one to take care of her.
For some reason he isnt guilty coz he feels he has spared the grandma all the pain she has been going through

I think that’s quite noble (and the money doesn’t hurt haha)

Oh I hate know-it-alls! they are great for the ‘bad guy’.

Hm. Let’s see…
I’d write a story where the person who receives the offer (let’s call him Bill) chooses a victim (let’s call him John), but only in Bill’s own mind. Before Bill tells the person who made the offer (let’s call him Tom) his choice of John, and thus, before Bill receives the money, Bill has second thoughts and ends up refusing Tom’s offer. The very next day, John is killed in a freak accident. So, John would have died anyway, giving Bill all sorts of mixed emotions. My story would deal with those feelings, and Bill’s eventual dealings with Tom.

I love this take on it 🙂

In the book that I have reviewed today one of the stories has such a condition. The Ambassador makes a deal with the devil to curse a newly born to save the lives of all that she wants. The curse is that when the child will speak, everyone who hears her voice will die.
The moment I read your post, this is what sprang to my mind!

That sounds like a fun story. Ok, maybe fun is the wrong word, but it sounds like something I’d enjoy!

Ooooohhhhh, I like this one! I would have my character pick an evil person to kill off, someone they know is definitely guilty. #AnythingGoes

My imperfect character has a strong moral compass and would not let anyone die even though they could have a murderer killed. Instead, discovers the sick mind behind the deal and their backstory. Others who are tempted with grudge killings are stopped at the last minute. x

What an interesting character development prompt! I think it brings up all sorts of moral questions doesn’t it! #AnythingGoes

oooh I would say that would be a tricky one but what use is a million pounds if you had to live with that sort of guilt eating you up for the rest of your life?! #anythinggoes
Debbie, My Random Musings
That would be a fab angle for a story
Sophie
Oooh good idea.
I would do something like…
This is a challenge at death to see if you are worthy or entry to the after life so the person being asked is actually already dead but doesn’t know it yet. Depending on their answer if who, if any, they would choose depends whether they go to heaven or hell (or somewhere in Between). But is it heaven or hell that offers you the million in return for a human sacrifice? Needs development but you get the general idea. #anythinggoes

I love this idea!

Tricky moral dilemma in this one. Today I could think of a fair few people online to nominate after the unsympathetic response to a news story #AnythingGoes

Ooo, interesting thought about a character. That really does tell a lot about a person. Mysterious!

Musings of a tired mummy...zzz...
Great dilemma for a character to face… I think it would be easy to choose someone ‘bad’ but then you become just as bad. #anythinggoes

Ooo this is a great prompt. I’m going to have to have a think about this one. I’ve been watching a lot of Scandal recently and wondering what Olivia Pope would do! #AnythingGoes

Too much guilt to live with in exchange for 1 million pound!! #anythinggoes
