Welcome to this year’s A-Z Blogging Challenge. My theme for this year is character prompts. Each day throughout April, you’ll find a new character prompt that relates to that day’s letter.
Day Ten: J – Joke’s on You
Your character is involved in an April Fool’s Day prank.
Are they more likely to be the one being pranked or the one playing the prank?
What prank are they involved in? Who do they play it on or who plays it on them?
Does it go well?
Is it well received or are they or the person pranked angry? Why?
I’d love to read some of the scenarios you create. Email them to me at debbie@myrandommusings.co.uk and I’ll share some of my favourites over the coming months here on the blog.

I’m not a fan of April Fool’s jokes played on me. My husband thinks I have no sense of humor. I just think different things are funny.

I think some are funny, but some are kind of tacky

have to admit this one leaves me a bit cold; it was always the time for the school bully to make excuses for really rather poor behaviour. More than happened in the other days of the year… Flashbacks… YAM xx

I’m sorry if this brought back bad memories x

I know this one, my charecter is in class and our class rules are if the cell phone rings it has to be put in speaker mode. I get a “call” from the maternity clinic confirming my pregnancy and the professor is embarassed and is apologizing when i say..i know my baby’s name..first name April…middle name Fool..
Prof is aghast and out of words and laughing at the same time

Haha that’s brilliant, I love it!

Great idea to do an A-to-Z on writing prompts, Debbie.
My bf recently told me about a prank that I thought was pretty funny. Someone had given him a retro-style can of Pepsi. He tends to save and collect odd things, and this was one of them. He put the Pepsi on his desk at work and left it there.
Every now and then, he thought his desk or papers felt a bit sticky, but he couldn’t find the cause. One day, he happened to pick up the can and–it was empty! A co-worker had poked a tiny pinhole in it, allowing the soda to slowly escape as mist.
Imagining the look on my bf’s face when he realized the can he’d been saving was empty made me laugh out loud.

Haha, that’s a brilliant prank!

I hate April Fools Day – our daughter was born on 31st March and I was SO relieved it wasn’t a day later! I don’t like jokes at the expense of others and that is what April Fools jokes always seem to be. I’d be happy to lose this day from the calendar.

J for Just Do It!

I think it’s ok between family/close friends that know each other’s humour, but it does seem that it’s often taken too far

I’m not a super huge fan of April Fool’s Day either. It leaves me on edge and distrustful of everyone around me. It can be fun thought, like the time my daughter put googly eyes on everything in my fridge! In my book, my main character would most definitely be the one being pranked, because April Fool’s Day is probably her boyfriend’s favorite holiday! Somehow, the joke would end up on him though…I’ve got to think about how that would happen!

I’d love to see what you come up with for that, I love the idea of the joke backfiring on your character’s boyfriend.
I love the googly eyes thing, so cute!
Giggling Fattie
This is a great topic for the challenge! Not only are you doing the challenge yourself but offering writing ideas to others? It’s brilliant!
I’m not a big April Fool’s person. My dad’s birthday is on April 1st so we always celebrate that and not the jokes.
Debbie, My Random Musings
Thank you 🙂 I think celebrating your dad’s birthday sounds much more fun than pranking each other
Jacqui
Good one. Mine definitely would be pranked! I like clever but it is so easily turned on the perp!
Debbie, My Random Musings
This sounds like a fun twist!

I love a good prank–on someone else! My character probably wouldn’t pull one but certainly would enjoy it!

Actually, just the phrase “Joke’s on you” made me want to write something around that.

Great news!

We have an unspoken rule in our house: no April Fool’s jokes (because my husband played one on me many years ago that backfired spectacularly).
Returning your A-Z visit

Now I’m intrigued to know what happened!
Wolf of Words
April Fool’s Day is often the worst as pranks are often unkind and go overboard. I often think of the video game Until Dawn which depicts a prank going really wrong. This is a prompt definitely worth thinking about as it is an easy way to establish character dynamics quickly.
Debbie, My Random Musings
I’m not a fan of it in real life, but it can be quite fun as a plot device 🙂
JEN Garrett
Thank you for this! It’s exactly what I need for my current writing project. I’ve got one character that’s being pranked and one that’s doing the pranking. I’ve been at a block with both. Not anymore!
Debbie, My Random Musings
Yayy so glad to hear it helped 🙂

These prompts are so great! This is another one of my weaknesses. I have read romance novels that have literally made me laugh out loud (like Shopping for a Billionaire by Julia Kent), but I find that I don’t write well in that way. Great exercise!
