Like China is different to the kinds of books I usually read, but sometimes, the best books are those hidden gems we’d never find if we never ventured out of the same genre, so when Vanessa contacted me to review her book, I decided to give it a go. Here’s what I thought about the book.
Like China by Vanessa Streete: My Review
Blurb from The Back Cover
Dobson. Just one of those names anyone who’s anyone in London knows. Elizabeth and her brother James have it all – the clubs, the money, the high life, but after the sudden death of their parents, the only thing they really want is each other, and that’s the way they’re both determined things are going to stay.
With help from Michael, James’s best friend, it’s the way it stays for a while, but time and the violent side of their nocturnal profession are against them at every turn. There are people so desperate to take it all away that they will go to any lengths to get what they want and that includes Elizabeth’s innocence, but Michael has other plans for her on that score and he fights at James’s side to protect her, painfully living the lie of brotherly pretence that has kept his shameful secret from even himself for so long.
This is the original fight for a really deep love, the original battle between good and evil, and the honest truth about love and loss and love again.
My Thoughts on The Book
Like China is a well written book. The writing style will pull you in straight away, and as you get to know the characters, you will find yourself rooting for them.
The book centres a lot around the romance element, which isn’t a genre I read a lot, but there was just enough happening outside of that to keep it interesting for non-romance fans too.
I found the characters to be realistically written and they used the kind of language in their dialogue that I would associate with this kind of character.
There’s plenty of sex that’s well written and not at all flowery.
Conclusion and Rating
Like China is a good read for romance fans (and maybe people like me who generally avoid the genre, because there’s fair bit of action too). Very well written with characters that feel real. 4/5.
