I loved the Divergent series by Veronica Roth so much that it made my Top Four YA Trilogies. Bearing in mind how much I enjoyed the series, I have no idea how it took me so long to get around to reading Four, an anthology of stories told from Four’s (one of the main characters in the Divergent series) point of view.
I have finally read it though and it didn’t disappoint.
Four by Veronica Roth: My Review
Blurb from The Back Cover
Two years before Beatrice Prior makes her choice, the sixteen-year-old son of Abnegation’s faction leader does the same. Tobias’s transfer to Dauntless is his chance to begin again. Newly renamed Four, he discovers that initiation is only the beginning.
Four must claim his place in the Dauntless hierarchy. And his decisions will affect future initiates as well as uncover secrets that could threaten his own future – and the future of the entire faction system.
Two years later, Four is poised to act but the course is still unclear. The first new initiate who jumps into the net might changes all that. With her, the way to righting their world might become clear. With her, it might become possible to be Tobias once again.
My Thoughts on The Book
I really enjoyed Four. The book gives a great insight into Four’s background, something which is only really hinted at in the original trilogy and it’s a great way to get to know him more as a character to see his backstory through his eyes rather than just see the snippets he chooses to reveal to Tris in the original books.
The book also features some familiar scenes told through Four’s eyes rather than Tris’s and it’s really interesting to see how Four’s mind works differently to Tris’s even though they are experiencing the same thing. The book shows a different side to Four – the more awkward, self-conscious version which is in stark contrast to the way Tris has always viewed him.
Conclusion and Rating
Four is a great addition to the Divergent series as a whole and if you read and enjoyed the trilogy, I would definitely recommend this book. If you haven’t read the original trilogy, read it before this one because there are parts that won’t make any sense without knowing the world and the characters. 5/5.
You can grab Four here and if you haven’t read the Divergent trilogy yet, you can grab that here or you can get all four of the books here.
