Welcome to the Author Interview. This time, it features the lovely RC Ajuonuma, author of King Billy and the Royal Road.
If you’re an author who’d like to take part in the series, email me: debbie@myrandommusings.co.uk
Now over to RC:
1 Firstly, tell us a little bit about yourself
I’m a dad, a husband and a keen football fan. I’ve also been known to write a word or two.
2 Tell us a little bit about your books
King Billy and the Royal Road is my first book. It’s a children’s story about a lonely little boy who discovers the world.
3 Where do you find your inspiration for your books?
I wrote King Billy and the Royal Road just after my first child was born. It’s my take on how a child emerges from the embrace of a parent to find their own place in the world.
4 What, for you, is the best thing about being a writer?
The best thing is being hit by the initial idea.
5 And the worst?
The worst is the nagging, clawing feeling you get when you procrastinate after you’ve had the big idea. That only disappears once you start writing it.
6 If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
To move through time. That way I could have a chat with my teenage self to tell him everything will be ok.
7 Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to write their first book?
Half the task is just starting it, so start it.
8 Tell us one random fact about you
I love honey-roasted cashews.
9 Who is your favourite author?
Dave Eggers
10 And your favourite book(s)?
What is the What
11 What book are you reading right now?
The Greek Myths by Robin Waterfield
12 Where is your favourite place to write?
I write in my study AKA the box room
13 Do you prefer to write in silence or do you have a writing soundtrack?
Silence every time.
14 What can we expect from you next?
I’m currently mulling over a sort of a sequel to King Billy and the Royal Road, which tells the tale of the Magician. He’s one of the minor characters in the story, but turns up at crucial points. There’s something mercurial about him, and I find that incredibly interesting.
15 Anything else you’d like to share with us?
Anymore would be telling!
