Welcome to the Author Interview. This time, it features the lovely Karina Bartow, author of Husband in Hiding.
If you’re an author who’d like to take part in the series, email me: debbie@myrandommusings.co.uk
Now over to Karina:
1 Firstly, tell us a little bit about yourself
I grew up and still live in Northern Ohio. Though born with Cerebral Palsy, I’ve never allowed my disability to define me. Rather, I’ve used my experiences to breathe life into characters who have physical limitations, but like me, are determined not to let them stand in the way of the life they want.
My debut novel, Husband in Hiding, was released in 2015 and was well-received by readers. I’m excited about my upcoming love story, Forgetting My Way Back to You, to be released by Vinspire Publishing on October 15, 2018.
I may only be able to type with one hand, but I write with my whole heart!
2 Tell us a little bit about your books
Forgetting My Way Back to You is about high school sweethearts, Charlee and Hunter, who reconnect after a decade-long estrangement. Their reunion goes much better than expected, until Charlee falls off a horse and loses every memory she has of Hunter. The twist enables him to play a heroic stranger and make her fall back in love with him, but it turns out a bit more difficult than he anticipates.
Husband in Hiding, a mystery, is the first of a series that follows a deaf detective, Minka Avery. In it, she and her partner, Cael, are investigating abductions of NBA players, but things go awry when her husband, Wes, meddles in it. He lands on the mob’s radar and has to go into Witness Protection. None of its sequels have been published yet, but I hope they will be someday.
3 Where do you find your inspiration for your books?
Different elements of my life, as well as my curious and creative mind.
4 What, for you, is the best thing about being a writer?
Letting my imagination fly.
5 And the worst?
How connected it is with your emotions. It can be hard to motivate yourself to write a happy scene when you aren’t happy, or to write an argument when you are. Sometimes you just need to write what you’re feeling and save it for the appropriate time…or delete it during editing.
6 If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
That’s a tricky one. I’d love to fly, but because my disability makes me stand out so much, I’d enjoy invisibility for a change.
7 Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to write their first book?
Be patient with yourself, and don’t set any time limits. You have to get used to being creative every day, and sometimes, you just won’t feel like it. When that happens, don’t be discouraged. It will get easier.
8 Tell us one random fact about you
I was serenaded and kissed on the cheek by Davy Jones—of “The Monkees”—when I was seven years old.
9 Who is your favourite author?
Nicholas Sparks
10 And your favourite book(s)?
The Bible and A Walk to Remember
11 What book are you reading right now?
Last Writes by Laura Levine
12 Where is your favourite place to write?
In my Parisian-themed home office.
13 Do you prefer to write in silence or do you have a writing soundtrack?
Silence, for sure.
14 What can we expect from you next?
After Forgetting My Way Back to You comes out, I hope to further pursue finding a home for my mystery series, The Unde(a)feted Detective Series.
