Anyone who has been reading this blog for a while will remember me taking part in the April A-Z Blogging Challenge. If you don’t, I wrote about characters prompts for fiction writers, and I invited anyone who wrote a piece based on one of them to submit it and I would publish some of my favourite pieces here.
Today I am sharing a piece by Jen Garrett, who chose to write on the zombie apocalypse prompt. Here’s the original prompt in case you missed it:
Your character finds themselves in the middle of a zombie outbreak.
Are they prepared for it?
How do they react? Do they hide? Fight?
What’s their chances of survival and how would they attempt to survive it?
Would they team up with others or go it alone?
Now over to Jen.
Zombie Apocalypse by Jen Garrett
“Hey Charlotte, I need you!”
“What, why?”
“Doesn’t matter, but I need you now!”
“Um, OK, what’s the problem? Do you have a dilemma? A conundrum?”
“You could say that (I think). You see I just read on Random Musings that there’s a zombie apocalypse upon us, and of course everything I read on the internet is 100% true – you know that Charlotte.”
“Oh, that’s preposterous.”
“What?”
“You know, preposterous. Ludicrous. Ridiculous. Asinine.”
“I literally can’t understand you. “
“Well, that’s debatable. If you literally couldn’t understand me, then it would be because, for example, I was speaking a foreign language. But I most certainly am speaking English.”
“Yeah, whatevs. Just stop talking. Look, all I know is the best way to fight zombies is to stand behind someone smart.”
“What? I don’t see any benefits to that. Besides, there’s no such thing as a zombie apocalypse. And with as little brains as you have, you’re probably safe anyway.”
“Yep. I am now. But you’re not.”
Author Bio
Jen Garrett writes for, about, and around children all day. But sometimes she finds time to do the dishes at her home in Northern California. She also finds time to polish picture book manuscripts, query agents, become a published playwright, and read mountains of books. How? We don’t know. Find out more about her at her website or follow her on Facebook and Twitter.

Thanks for posting my story on your blog, which I assume made it into your “favorites” category, lol.
Thanks, Yamini, too! I didn’t even think of it that way, but you’re right – I managed a story about zombies without actual zombies. Go me!
Debbie, My Random Musings
