I really enjoy reading court room dramas and I was excited to discover Steve Cavanagh, particularly when I saw the twist in Thirteen. I’ll definitely be looking for some more books by this author.
Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh: My Review
Blurb from The Back Cover
The murder trial of the century is here.
A ruthless prosecutor.
A brilliant defence lawyer.
A defendant with a secret.
And a serial killer on the jury…
My Thoughts on The Book
I loved the idea of there being a serial killer on the jury. It’s such a unique twist on the standard serial killer/courtroom drama and Thirteen didn’t disappoint.
The book swings between the point of view of Kane, the serial killer, and Eddie, the defence lawyer. The book gives a fascinating look into the way Kane thinks and what he’s trying to achieve with his killings. It also does a really good job of the court side of things.
Eddie is a likeable character who you’re rooting for. Kane is intentionally unlikeable, and yet, there were times that I found myself rooting for him not to be caught as well. Not because I liked him, but because I wanted to see exactly how far he was willing to go.
Even though we know from the beginning who the killer is in the book, there are still lots of twists and turns that keep the reader guessing and constantly surprised me.
Conclusion and Rating
I loved Thirteen. I was a little worried that it wouldn’t live up to the concept, but it totally did. The court case was believable and the scenes involving the jury were interesting as the jury is often overlooked in court room dramas except for the lawyers watching their reactions etc.
I think Steve Cavanagh did a great job of pulling this off. 5/5.
