The Dilemma was a book that was recommended to me and now I can’t remember who recommended it (sorry, and if you’re reading this, thank you). It was an excellent recommendation and I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
The Dilemma by Abbie Taylor
Blurb from The Back Cover
Call yourself a nurse. I thought you could help me. You’ve just left me here to suffer.
Haunted by her grandmother’s dying words, Dawn can only take comfort in the oath she took on becoming a nurse; first do no harm. It’s a promise she believes in and takes seriously.
But when a terminally ill patient begs Dawn to end her suffering, Dawn is faced with an unimaginable choice. Except this wouldn’t be murder, it would be mercy – wouldn’t it?
When she starts receiving threats, Dawn realizes that someone knows her terrible secret – and that their silence will come at a price. She risked everything for what she believed was right once before – but will she know when to stop?
My Thoughts on The Book
The Dilemma is a great read with plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing. The dilemma the title refers to isn’t necessarily the obvious one, but more about what comes after it.
Dawn is a likeable character, and she is put in a position no one wants to be in. I think a lot of people will perhaps judge her actions, but at the same time you will feel for her, and as things spiral out of control, whether you agree with her choice or not you’ll find yourself rooting for her.
The Dilemma raises some interesting questions – is it morally correct to mercy kill someone? Is it morally correct to keep a person alive in such a state that you’d be prosecuted for keeping a dog alive that way? – but it’s about so much more than that one question.
Conclusion and Rating
While I did really enjoy this book (it’s one of my favourites I’ve read this year so far), I did find it a bit far fetched that Dawn made that first decision so quickly with no real deliberation, but I guess Abbie Taylor chose to leave that part out fearing it might bore her readers. Definitely one to put on your list! 4.5/5

I love the sound of this book. It’s intriguing – I would like it to explain what made her go through with it in the first place, what made her different than the rest of us? xx
