I love stumbling across book recommendations and I often find some hidden gems that I otherwise wouldn’t have found through lists like these, which is why I share my own lists, so you can hopefully find a cracking book you otherwise might have missed.
Here are the top five (in particular order) books I’ve read from July through to September:
The Hospital by Barbara O’Hare
Barbara O’Hare was just 12 when she was admitted to the psychiatric hospital, Aston Hall, in 1971. From a troubled home, she’d hoped she would find sanctuary there. But within hours, Barbara was tied down, drugged with sodium-amytal – a truth telling drug – and then abused by the head physician, Dr Kenneth Milner.
The terrifying drug experimentation and relentless abuse that lasted throughout her stay damaged her for life. But somehow, Barbara clung to her inner strength and eventually found leading a campaign to demand answers for potentially hundreds of victims.
A shocking account of how vulnerable children were prayed upon by the doctor entrusted with their care, and why it must never happen again.

Thirteen by Steve Cavanaugh
The murder trial of the century is here.
A ruthless prosecutor.
A brilliant defence lawyer.
A defendant with a secret.
And a serial killer on the jury.

Vox by Christina Dalcher
Jean McClellan spends her time in almost complete silence, limited to just one hundred words a day. Any more, and a thousand volts of electricity will course through her veins.
Now the new government is in power, everything has changed. But only if you’re a woman.
Almost overnight, bank accounts are frozen, passports are taken away and seventy million women lose their jobs. Even more terrifyingly, young girls are no longer taught to read and write.
For herself, her daughter, and for every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice. This is only the beginning …
100 word limit reached.

The List by Siobhan Vivian
It happens every September – the list is posted all over school. Two girls are picked from each year.
One is named the prettiest, one the ugliest.
The girls who aren’t picked are quickly forgotten. The girls who are become the centre of attention, and each reacts differently to the experience.
When they discover they are this year’s victims, Danielle, Abby, Candace, Lauren, Sarah, Bridget, Jennifer and Margo struggle with the judgements of their peers. After all, prettiest or ugliest, once you’re on the list, you’ll never be the same.

The Dilemma by Abbie Taylor
Call yourself a nurse. I thought you could help me. You’ve left me here to suffer.
Haunted by her grandmother’s dying words, Dawn can only take comfort in the oath she took on becoming a nurse: first do no harm. It’s a promise she believes in and takes seriously.
But when a terminally ill patients begs Dawn to end her suffering, Dawn is faced with an impossible choice. Except this wouldn’t be murder, it would be mercy – wouldn’t it?
When she starts receiving threats, Dawn realises that someone knows her terrible secret … and that their silence will come at a price. She risked everything for what she believed was right once before – but will she know when to stop?
