While I’m not massively into sci-fi, I love a good dystopian themed book, so when Michael Shotter contacted me and asked me to review his book, 309, I of course said yes as it sounded right up my street. Below is my review.
309 by Michael Shotter
Blurb from The Back Cover
Meet Lisa Hudson, a dedicated journalism student, on a beautiful spring morning in Pittsburgh that proves to be the last ordinary day of her life.
As she struggles to survive in a new reality forged from catastrophe, Lisa confronts its mysteries and dangers with the aid of intriguing and unlikely companions.
For her, the world will never be the same. For you, the journey is just beginning.
My Thoughts on The Book
I’ll be honest – when I first started reading 309 and realised the dystopian feel to the world was caused by an alien invasion, I cringed. But I gave it a chance and I was so glad I did. For the most part, the aliens come second to the human element of the story.
The story follows Lisa and Joe as they set out on a mission to learn some answers about what’s going on – why people have been sucked up into alien space craft and why they suddenly have strange powers. Both Lisa and Joe are likeable, well rounded characters that will pull you into the story and make you care about them. Their journey is an interested one with plenty of interesting characters met along the way.
I don’t want to give any spoilers, but the end of the book is worthwhile and your questions will be answered in a plausible way that doesn’t require a ton of knowledge of space type tech (I know nothing about any of those kinds of things and I was able to follow along and not get lost or bored).
The plot moves along at a nice pace and there is plenty going on throughout the book.
Conclusion and Rating
I really enjoyed 309 and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys what I think of as light sci-fi – it has elements of sci-fi, but at it’s heart, it’s a story of survival, friendship and morality. 4/5

I haven’t read this, no. Glad you enjoyed it, though.
I think you’ll find that *good* SF is ALWAYS about people and how their lives are affected by whatever the issue is. I love SF. If I don’t care about the characters I won’t read any more by that author, I don’t care how amazing the premise is.
