Welcome to day nineteen of the A-Z Challenge – S is for The Shining.
My theme for this year is “The A-Z of My Favourite Books and Authors”. Each day (except Sunday) will feature a book or author whose title or first or last name starts with the corresponding letter of the alphabet.
Another of my favourite Stephen King books today with The Shining. The Overlook hotel, Redrum and Here’s Johnny have become iconic in the horror world since the release of this book and the story never gets old. You know from the get go that this is going to be trouble when the Torrance family move to the hotel in the middle of nowhere in the closed season, but I don’t think anyone could imagine exactly how much.
The story feels all too easy to imagine and you are kept on the edge of your seat as Jack and Danny are pulled into the world of the supernatural. You can’t help but feel Danny’s fear with him and root for him to find a way to save himself from the evil of the hotel.
The Shining is Stephen King at his amazing, disturbing and chilling best.

Yes! Read this one. Loved it and the movie still scared me!

I enjoyed the movie, but I found the book much creepier

I only experienced the movie a few years ago and it disturbed me. I also read Stephen King’s follow up piece of Danny Torrence ‘all grown up with a drinking problem’ in Doctor Sleep, it was ok but after reading a handful of his books I can honestly say I am not a fan.

The book is way better than the movie, although I did enjoy the movie. I liked Doctor Sleep, but I don’t think it’s one of his best books.
J.H. Moncrieff
Love this book. It’s one of the first King novels I ever read. I’d love to read a newer release that I’d enjoy as much.
I hate to say it, but some magic has been lost. 🙁

I’ll always be a huge Stephen King fan and I read everything he writes, but I know what you mean – the older stuff has something about it that doesn’t quite seem to be there now.

Love this author – the books are far superior to the movies

Totally agree!
