Welcome to day twenty of the A-Z Challenge – T is for Thirteen.
My theme for this year is “The A-Z of My Favourite Books and Authors”. Each day (except Sunday) will feature a book or author whose title or first or last name starts with the corresponding letter of the alphabet.
I love court room dramas, and Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh didn’t disappoint. Thirteen has a unique twist in that we already know the accused isn’t in fact the serial killer. We know this because the serial killer is on the jury. It’s a great twist on a classic plot that Cavanagh pulls off amazingly well.
We have chapters written from the killer’s viewpoint and through those chapters, we learn more about his mission to be a part of the jury at what should be his own trial. We also get chapters from the lawyer’s point of view as he works to prove his client’s innocence. The court room scenes feel realistic and so do the characters.
I love the twist on the classic and even though we know who the killer is right from the start of the book, there are still enough plot twists to keep you on your toes and needing to know what happens next.
