I love YA fiction and I’m really surprised I didn’t discover the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld sooner. But better late than never right? I thought I’d share my review of the series in case anyone else missed it. Don’t worry, there won’t be any spoilers. I’ll only be including the blurb from the first book.
The Uglies Series by Scott Westerfeld
Blurb from The Back Cover
Tally can’t wait to turn sixteen and become Pretty. Sixteen is the magic number that brings a transformation from a repellent Ugly into a stunningly attractive Pretty, and catapults you into a high tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks, Tally will be there.
But Tally’s new friend, Shay, isn’t sure she wants to be Pretty. She’d rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the Pretty world – and it isn’t very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine; find her friend and turn her in, or never turn Pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.
My Thoughts on The Book
I really enjoyed the Uglies series. The concept is a good one, and I think it definitely speaks to our society – where children grow up craving being pretty rather than anything else.
The technology is interesting and for the most part, believable, and the characters are well rounded and likeable.
The series definitely shows the sinister side of material beauty, and as the series progresses and the reasoning behind becoming pretty becomes clearer, the concept becomes all the more plausible.
Conclusion and Rating
I couldn’t stop reading this series once I started it and I got through all four books in about five days. It’s thought provoking, fun, and heart breaking in places. Definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys YA fiction with a unique concept and characters you can’t help but root for. 5/5

Sounds like a great series for young adults. It’s sad that society has become so obsessed with looks.
