I really enjoy reading and discovering new books and authors and I often find new reads on other people’s blogs. It can be hard to choose your next book sometimes because there is just so much choice.
With that in mind, I’ve put together a list of the five best books I’ve read between July and September of 2019. You can find the list of ten of my favourites from the start of the year here.
This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay
Welcome to the life of a junior doctor. 97 hour weeks, life and death decisions, a constant tsunami of bodily fluids, and the hospital parking meter earns more than you.
Scribbled in secret after endless days, sleepless nights and missed weekend’s. Adam Kay’s This is Going to Hurt provides a no holds barred account of his time on the NHS front line. Hilarious, horrifying and heart breaking, this diary is everything you wanted to know – and more than a few things you didn’t – about life on and off the hospital ward.

Matched by Ally Condie
On her seventeenth birthday, Cassia meets her match. Society dictates he is her perfect partner for life. Except he’s not.
In Cassia’s society, Officials decide who people love. How many children they have. Where they work. When they die.

Charisma by Jeanne Ryan
A chance at the ultimate make over means deadly consequences. Aislyn suffers from crippling shyness – that is until she’s offered a dose of Charisma, an underground gene therapy drug guaranteed to make her shine.
The effects are instant. She’s charming, vivacious and popular. But strangely, so are some other kids she knows.
The media goes into a frenzy when the disease turns contagious, and then deadly, and the doctor who gave it to them disappears. Aislyn must find a way to stop it before it’s too late.

Imposters by Scott Westerfeld
Frey and Rafi are inseparable … two edges of the same knife. But Frey’s very existence is a secret. Frey is Rafi’s twin sister – and her body double.
Their powerful father has many enemies and the world has grown dangerous as the old order falls apart. So while Rafi was raised as the perfect daughter, Frey has been taught to kill. Her only purpose is to protect her sister, to sacrifice herself for Rafi if she must.
When her father send Frey in Rafi’s place as collateral in a precarious deal, she becomes the perfect imposter – as poised and charming as her sister. But Col, the son of a rival leader, is getting close enough to spot the killer inside of her.
As the deal begins to crumble, Frey must decide if she can trust him with the truth … and if she can risk becoming her own person.
With Imposters, master story teller Scott Westerfeld returns with a new series set in the world of his mega bestselling series, Uglies. A world full of twists and turns, rebellion and intrigue, where any wrong step could be Frey’s last.

The Queen of the Tearling series by Erika Johansen
You might remember me recommending The Queen of the Tearling before. I have finally gotten around to finishing the series! I have included the blurb for book one only as I don’t want to spoil anything by sharing the blurb for them all.
Kelsea Glynn is the soul heir to the throne of the Tearling but has been raised in secret after her mother – a monarch as vain as she was foolish – was murdered for ruining her kingdom. For eighteen years, the Tearling has been ruled by Kelsea’s uncle in the role of Regent, however he is debauched puppet of the Red Queen, the sorceress tyrant of neighbouring realm Mortmesme.
On Kelsea’s nineteenth birthday, the tattered remains of her mother’s guard – each pledged to defend the queen to the death – arrive to bring this most un-regal young woman out of hiding.
And so begins her journey back to her kingdom’s heart, to claim her throne, win the loyalty of her people, overturn her mother’s legacy, and redeem the Tearling from the forces of corruption and dark magic that are threatening to destroy it.
But Kelsea’s story is not just about her learning the true nature of her of her inheritance – it’s about a heroine who must learn to acknowledge and live with the realities of coming of age in all its insecurities and attractions, alongside the ethical dilemmas of ruling justly and fairly while simply trying to stay alive.
