When I was a teenager, I definitely believed Friday 13th was unlucky. As I got older, I started to question the logic of that – nothing particularly bad had ever happened to me on Friday 13th. Even then though, I kind of thought that saying I didn’t believe the day to be unlucky would somehow tempt fate and make bad things happen.
Now, I can honestly say I don’t believe Friday 13th is any more or less unlucky than any other day. I mean sure, something bad might happen, but it’s purely coincidence. And I think when you believe the day is unlucky, you look for bad things so you can validate your belief.
For example, you might miss the bus. Any other day you would accept it was because you left the house too late, or you stopped to chat, or one of a hundred other things. On Friday 13th, you’d blame the day.
So What Made Me Change My Mind?
As I started to really think about it, and I realised that actually, it wasn’t a particularly unlucky day, I decided to try and find out why people thought that day was unlucky. The thirteen part I understood, because so many people associate the number with bad luck (for the record I don’t), but the Friday part threw me. Why not Monday 13th? Or Wednesday 13th?
A quick Google search told me that it’s believed to be an unlucky day because of the last supper. The last supper is said to have taken place on a Friday, and because there were thirteen disciples and the thirteenth betrayed Jesus, Friday 13th was viewed as unlucky.
That was the moment I knew for sure I didn’t believe the day was unlucky anymore. I mean as an atheist, how could I believe the day to be unlucky because of the last supper? Obviously I couldn’t.
To me, it’s up there with the other urban legends like Bloody Mary etc. To be honest, the only reason I now even notice it is Friday 13th is because I have my daily to-do lists in my diary so I see the date every day.
So in answer to my original question, is Friday 13th really unlucky? In my opinion, no it really isn’t.
Do you believe Friday 13th is particularly unlucky? Why or why not? Let me know in the comments 🙂

I have never been suspicious and don’t think that Friday 13th is particularly unlucky. In fact, I can remember a few instances when it actually turned out to be auspicious rather than superstious.

It’s always good when something like this turns around and becomes a good day!

I think they have done studies and shown that bad stuff doesn’t happen more on Friday the 13th than any other day.

I didn’t know there had been studies on it

I never knew that the Friday the 13th superstition originated with the last supper. Thanks for teaching me something new today!

I definitely get superstitious about some things but not this one. I know some people who do believe in it a bit but honestly to me it is just something that happens sometimes – Friday falls on the 13th of the month, end of…#bloggerclubuk
