You might remember now so long ago I did a review of the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld. Impostors is the latest novel from Scott Westerfeld, and it’s set in the same world as the Uglies series, so I had high hopes of it being another great read.
Impostors by Scott Westerfeld
Blurb from The Back Cover
Frey and Rafi are inseparable … two edges of the same knife. But Frey’s very existence is a secret.
Frey is Rafi’s twin – and her body double. While Rafi was raised to be the perfect daughter, Frey has been taught to kill. Her only purpose is to protect her sister – to sacrifice herself is she must.
When her father sends Frey in Rafi’s place as collateral in a precarious deal, she becomes the perfect impostor. But Col, the son of a rival leader, is getting close enough to spot the killer inside her. Can Frey trust him with the truth and risk becoming her own person?
My Thoughts on The Book
Overall, I enjoyed Impostors. I liked the concept and I liked Frey and Col. They were both characters with secrets and those secrets are slowly revealed through the book, giving the reader a good understanding of the characters.
The concept behind the book is interesting, and see Frey’s constant inner battle to keep herself hidden and act like Rafi is interesting too. You can’t help but root for Frey – after all, she’s been told of her life that she’s worthless except as collateral damage if someone makes an attempt on her sister’s life.
Rafi, Frey’s twin, took me a lot longer to warm up to. I’m not sure if this was intentional, because I got the feeling I was supposed to like Rafi, but she didn’t feel as real and well drawn as Frey to me in the beginning.
Conclusion and Rating
Although I enjoyed Impostors, and had I bought it based solely on the blurb of the book, I would have been happy enough with it, I was actually a little disappointed in it. I bought the book because I enjoyed the Uglies series and this book is set in that world – except to me, it wasn’t really. There was a few throw away mentions of that world’s characters and the technology was the same, but other than that, it really could have been set anywhere. 4/5.

I loved your review of the Uglies Series and i’m still adamant to give it a read. It’s a shame this one didnt quite hit the mark considering how much you liked the Uglies Series.

Yeah it was a shame. I mean the book isn’t a bad book, it just didn’t live up to what I was expecting it to be.
