Today’s book to be won is Tribe: Made in Britain by Martin Roach, Ian Snowball and Pete McKenna
Perhaps more than any other country in the world, Britain can boast an underbelly of rich and creative youth subculture that has indelibly shaped and infected global culture. Five decades since the teenager first arrived, the island that broke the mould still continues to reinvent and spew out a myriad of youth subcultures.
These tribes have frequently been documented by the opinions of observers who were often remote witnesses to the phenomenon. Tribe: Made in Britain lets the tribes speak for themselves. The book contains a wealth of exclusive, first hand interviews with key players from pivotal moments in youth culture: skinhead, goths, punks, grebos, scooter boys, ravers, casuals, two tones, mods, rockers, bikers and more. The book is crammed with first-hand accounts of these spectacularly colourful subcultures, what they wore, the music they listened to, how they lived, and perhaps most importantly of all, why they existed in the first place.
Collated by authors Martin Roach, Ian Snowball and Pete McKenna, Tribe: Made in Britain, is not an encyclopaedia style reference work on every youth culture in Britain鈥檚 dynamic subcultural history. Instead, it is an unashamedly personal and highly subjective record of the individual memories and opinions of its contributors.
The haircuts might not stalk the streets of Britain anymore, but youth culture persists as a never ending cauldron of passion, individualism, a kick against authority and above all, a yearning to be different. Illustrated with a selection of photos taken from the personal albums of the interviewees, Tribe: Made in Britain is a stunning and very personal chronicle of multiple elements of British subculture.
