For the first book review of the year, I have chosen Survivor by Tom Hoyle. It’s marketed as for fans of Gone and I loved Gone, so I had high hopes for this one. It’s absolutely nothing like Gone in any way shape or form, but I did quite enjoy it. Read on for the full review.
Survivor by Tom Hoyle
Blurb from the Back Cover
One mysterious death on the Ultimate Bushcraft adventure holiday is tragic, but a second and then a third is suspicious.
But who can you trust when everyone around you is a suspect?
As numbers dwindle, the chances of survival plummet. Staying alive has never seemed so guilty.
Nobody is safe …
My Thoughts on the Book
Survivor is a nice, easy read, perfect for a commute or a beach read where you want something you don’t need to focus on too hard. The concept is simple yet good – a group of boys on an adventure holiday and their guides begin being picked off one by one by a mysterious killer.
I had my suspicions early on about who the killer was and why, so there wasn’t really a twist but at the same time, the killer was the person with the most believable motive which lent a sense of reality to the story.
While the story itself wasn’t particularly ground breaking, I thought the characters where well fleshed out and I liked the writing style. I have bought another of Tom Hoyle’s books based on the fact that I enjoyed the way the book was written.
Conclusion and Rating
Overall, I enjoyed Survivor, but I think i would have enjoyed it more had I not gone into expecting it be similar to Gone. If you go into expecting a murder mystery, you will enjoy this one. 3/5
