It was the tagline – You voted her in. Now can you live with the consequences? – that first caught my attention with The Choice and when I read the blurb, it sounded right up my street so of course I had to give it a go and I am so glad I did. Read on for my full review.
The Choice by Claire Wade
Blurb from the Back Cover
Imagine a world where …
Everything you ate was monitored by the government.
Every step you took was counted.
Your children were weighed every day at school.
Neighbours reported on neighbours and no one was safe from judgement.
Sugar was illegal, and baking was a crime.
Imagine if that world was here … what would you do?
Toe the line, or fight for your freedom?
My Thoughts on the Book
The Choice was a really good read. It did a good job at showing how you should be careful what you wish for, because once you have it, you might not be able to get rid of it again. The story is scarily plausible and I think that alone makes it a compelling read, but it is entertaining too.
It highlights how power can easily corrupt and how so many people are willing to look the other way while it happens as long as it isn’t them or their family in the firing line.
Claire Wade does a great job of using Olivia, the main character, to illustrate the feelings of frustration, anger and fear that hang over the character’s heads every day. The only thing I struggled with involving Olivia’s character was how easily she switched from being scared to being a rebel – it would have been nice to perhaps see a little bit of that rebellious side of her sooner without her constant fear over shadowing it.
Conclusion and Rating
The Choice is a good read if you fancy something plausible and easy to read at the same time. It’s a bit predictable but the quality of the writing makes this somewhat forgivable as the story still pulls you in. I will be keeping an eye out for the next Claire Wade novel. 4/5
