For this year’s A-Z Challenge, I have decided to do “An A-Z of Sarah J Maas characters”. The characters will be from the ACOTAR (A Court of Thorns and Roses) and ToG (Throne of Glass) series’ because when I first started researching this idea, I hadn’t read all of the CC (Crescent City) series.
Each day I will focus on one character from ACOTAR, TOG, or both, and I will share things such as an image of how I imagine them to look, what I like or dislike about the character, and how they affect the story.
I will try my best not to have any spoilers and if there are any, they will only be small ones – if I judge this differently to you then I apologise in advance.
Without further ado, let’s get to today’s post – Day Eighteen, R.
ACOTAR – R is for Rhysand
Rhysand, or Rhys, is the High Lord of the Night Court and Feyre’s mate. When we are first introduced to Rhysand and the Night Court, we are shown a place of darkness and a High Lord who rules over the bad guys. Once Rhys starts to trust Feyre though, he shows her a different side to the Night Court in Velaris, a city he and his Inner Circle have kept hidden from the rest of the courts to keep their people safe.
Rhys is definitely a good mate for Feyre and I love that he respects her as an equal and makes her High Lady of the Night Court rather than just his mate. He doesn’t try to control Feyre and it is clear that he loves her beyond measure. I also love the dynamic between Rhysand and Cassian and Azriel. Rhys is one of my favourite characters in this series.
My favourite Rhys quote: “Not consort. Not wife. Feyre is the High Lasdy of the Night Court. My equal in every way; she would wear my crown, sit on a throne beside mine. Never side lined, never designated to breeding and parties and child rearing.”
ToG – R is for Rowan
Rowan is a part of Queen Maeve’s court when we first meet him. He is a warrior and a shifter – he can shift into a falcon which comes in handy for scoping out enemy movement. He is tasked with training Aelin who wants an audience with Maeve. Maeve will only allow that if she proves her worth. Rowan and Aelin fall for each other and he is revealed as her mate. He breaks his vow to Maeve and takes the Blood Oath to Aelin, swearing his allegiance to her.
I took a while to warm up to Rowan, but I did eventually grow to like him, and although I always liked Aelin with Dorian, it was nice to see her with someone who wasn’t a bit afraid of her and who saw her as a woman as well as the Fire Bringer.
My favourite Rowan quote: “To whatever end, Fire Heart.”
Do you like today’s choice(s)? Who would you have chosen for this letter? Let me know in the comments.

I haven’t read the books (not a big fan of Romantsy), but, wow, do readers like Rhys. But Rowan seems more like a man I would want to align with.

Honestly, I don’t do romance/romantasy but I saw ACOTAR everywhere and finally gave in haha and I surprised myself by loving it. Throne of Glass might be best for you because the bits and bobs of romance are just a sub plot.
Donna
Nice descriptions.
Ronel Janse van Vuuren
Rhys sounds swoon-worthy 🙂

Most definitely and I don’t think I did him justice here either haha

I have only read the first A Court of Thorns and Roses and the first Throne of glass. I loved ACOTAR and really need to read the rest in the series

Oh you definitely do! The books get better as they go on.
