For this year’s A-Z Challenge, I have decided to do “An A-Z of Sarah J Maas characters”. The characters will be from the ACOTAR (A Court of Thorns and Roses) and ToG (Throne of Glass) series’ because when I first started researching this idea, I hadn’t read all of the CC (Crescent City) series.
Each day I will focus on one character from ACOTAR, TOG, or both, and I will share things such as an image of how I imagine them to look, what I like or dislike about the character, and how they affect the story.
I will try my best not to have any spoilers and if there are any, they will only be small ones – if I judge this differently to you then I apologise in advance.
Without further ado, let’s get to today’s post – Day Twenty Four, X.
ACOTAR – X is for ‘Xtras’
An interesting extra character from ACOTAR is Alis. Alis is a maid given to Feyre by Tamlin. At first, Alis is cold towards Feyre due to her having killed Andras, but she does come around knowing that Andras was well aware of what could happen when he went to the human place. Once she warms to Feyre, she becomes like a mother to her, even going so far as to keep her secrets from Tamlin. She is a loyal friend to Feyre.
ToG – X is for ‘Xtras’
We first meet Caltain as one of the noble women of Adarlan. She is a minor character who has her sights set on Dorian despite already being in a relationship with one of the lords.
*Spoiler alert* She is revealed to have magic and is thrown into the dungeons, where Aelin takes pity on her and gives her a cloak to keep her warm. Caltain is taken away by Vernon and we later learn that he is planning to use her to take Aelin’s army down by inserting a Wyrdkey into her arm and making her powers unstoppable. Caltain manages to fight back and she brings down Vernon and his entire hold. This gives Manon and her Thirteen chance to escape and also allows Elide to leave. Caltain remembers the kindness shown to her by Aelin and she tells Elide to find her and give her the Wyrdkey that she digs out of her arm.
I wasn’t a huge fan of Caltain at the start of the series, but she did grow on me and i was both surprised and impressed by her strength in the end.
Do you like today’s choice(s)? Who would you have chosen for this letter? Let me know in the comments.

Hmmm. Sounds interesting – a person possessing the power of magic to be tossed into a dungeon and then given a cloak, which, my mind immediately thinks will help her hide what she’s up to. I might have to read this book to find out.

That’s an interesting theme for the challenge!

Only a few minutes ago did I think more deeply about your blog theme. This author must have a lot of books out to have enough characters to go through the alphabet. And how did you ever come up with such a neat theme? And not get stuck X, Y, and Z? 🙂

Y wasn’t so bad but I kind of cheated on X and Z lol

I can see why you had misgivings about the character Caltain, because as soon as you said she had her eye on Dorian while in a relationship with someone else, I disliked her.
But then the idea of her being tossed into a dungeon, and knowing she has magical powers, while that makes me curious enough to want to know more. Great review.

I hate when a series has a lot of characters with the same letter and it does seem like there are a lot of A names. I usually wind up getting confused about which character is which.
Ronel Janse van Vuuren
Strong female characters.

The best kind when done well!
